Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

Jar Jar Binks was not that bad, CGI-wise. Sure, he looks rather primitive compared to Gollum, Davy Jones, or Caesar the Ape, but he paved the way for characters like that.

I have a lot of problems with Jar Jar, but his CGI wasn't one of them. For the time it was pretty good, and I think it still holds up decently. I've seen a lot worse come out later, and not age nearly as well.

And he looks more photorealistic than Joh Yowza or Sy Snootles do in any of the Special Edition theatrical or home video releases of ROTJ, so at least he has that going for him.

True, Jar-Jar being CG is definitely the least annoying thing about that character.

"Jedi Rocks" just may be the dumbest change to any OT movie next to Greedo shooting first. If George wanted to upgrade Sy Snootles and members of the Max Rebo band with CGI versions then I have no qualms with that, but did they have to get rid of "Lapti Nek"? It's a cool song and actually sounds like a strange alien with an exotic language is singing it.

"Jedi Rocks" is probably as annoying as anything Jar Jar did in Episode I but it just seems on the surface to be less irritating because it's taking place inside Jabba's Palace in the Original Trilogy.

People seem to forget, that people complained mainly about the practical aliens in Episode I, the Neimoduains like Newt Gunrea and Lott Dod because the lip sync did not match and it was like Japan anime. Jar-Jar was shit but Watto and Sebulba were cool.

I'd be more concerned about Boyega's south London accent.

The Trade Federation Neimoidians in Episode I were ambitious animatronic makeup and costumes, but you're right. The lips just didn't sync up with their dialogue most of the time and it could be distracting. On the other hand, most of Episode I's CGI aliens were downright impressive and there were far fewer stupid and annoying creatures and droids mugging to the camera than we saw in the next two Prequels.

Episode I has a thousand and one flaws but at least its CGI tended to look more natural and photorealistic when combined with the cinematography and the actual celluloid film stock the first Prequel was filmed on.

The fact that the practical aliens were also done badly doesn't make the CGI any better. It isn't like they made those puppets and filmed those shots not realizing they sucked. They didn't film Yoda's scenes thinking "This looks great! Just as good as the old puppet!" Clearly, on some level, they just didn't care that much.

The Episode I Yoda is baffling. Who in their right mind (or anything approaching one) thought that the puppet designed for the movie looked like the Original Trilogy Yoda, only 35 years younger? They're like two different members of the same species who just happen to share the same name and voice and the differences between the two puppet designs are glaring and one of the most distracting aspects of any of the Prequels.

Even the most virulent critics and haters have to agree that the Blu ray changes made to Episode I to fix that awful puppet were one of the best alterations George has made to any of his films.

I wish they would dumb the Neimodians and give them subtitles to lose the bad voice over look.

Yeah, the thing with Jar-Jar, he was more annoying as a character (as well as Boss Nass), than as a special effect.Snoke, at least from the voice over in the trailer, seems to be a far more serious character than those.

I think it's when Episode II rolled around and George used CG for stuff that could've worked at least partially practically (Clonetroopers, the space FX) that people started to really complain. The most practical scene is the Coruscant nightclub in AOTC (apart from the screens showing podracing and stuff like that). I think that's also the scene with the most cameos in the movie from Lucas's daughters, production staff and actors out of costume (in this case, Anthony Daniels and Ahmed Best). Not quite as bad as the scene at the end of TPM where you can clearly see Rick McCallum and Ben Burtt awkwardly standing next to Natalie Portman.

I'd be really surprised if the leader of the Empire was an alien. I know the pro-human racism is being downplayed in the new continuity... but... the Empire was all human in the movies...
The bad guys in this aren't the Empire.

If the Empire aren't the bad guys this time, then who are the bad guys? Why would Tie fighters be firing on the Falcon if the Empire wasn't the bad guys?

It's a game of semantics, Empire = First Order, Rebel Alliance = The Resistance. Obviously The Empire exists in one form or another and continue to use ships, methods and Stormtroopers that we associate with the Empire, while the Resistance uses Jedi (presumably only Luke at this point) and familiar ships. Maybe it's not a Galactic Empire in control of the whole Galaxy, but they are the bad guys.

Russia isn't the USSR. Germany isn't the Holy Roman Empire. etc. The First Order appears to be a resurgent remnant of some kind, but with a new power structure and new leadership.

Yeah, it's sort of unclear what the situation is with the Resistance and the Order. Some are thinking that after Endor, the Rebels were able to temporarily gain the upper hand, but something happened (possibly at Jakku) that turned the tables.

As for aliens in the Empire, remember outside of Chewie the Rebellion didn't have that many aliens either until ROTJ-we saw them mainly on Tatooine-and even then, it was 90% in the cantina or natives (Jawas/Tuskens/Sandpeople). I think it was, in part, a budget issue. The Empire not liking aliens is more of a "Legends" Expanded Universe thing. It's also worth noting that in Episodes II and III Palpatine has aliens as his aides (Although one worked for Valorum in TPM) after he becomes Emperor.
