Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

Star Wars is more than a movie. For most of us, we grew up with it. It's a major part of our childhoods. Playing with action figures, making up new adventures for Luke, Han and Leia, using sticks as lightsabers in an unsupervised setting. It tapped into something special. This is the first time in years, that it seems to be coming back to what it was.

Abrams does seem to have a knack for making the old, new and fun again.

The best thing that Disney did was torpedo the Expanded Universe. By wiping the slate clean they gave us back that sense of excitement and anticipation. We literally have no idea what is about to happen, and we have no way of guessing. Unlike the prequels, whose basic plot and story development were already set, this new film is a complete blank slate. That's awesome.

I never really got into the various animated shows, but damn, I'm glad to see Star Wars back on the big screen.

Great trailer. It definitely looks and feels like a Star Wars movie, just updated with modern film-making technology. Whether the story will hold up...who knows? But so far I'm pretty excited.

I'm still wondering how they'll explain how Luke's (and Anakin's) old lightsaber was found and retrieved after it was lost at Cloud City. I know the EU explained what happened to the weapon but that's been jettisoned like the trash and waste from a Star Destroyer before jumping to hyperspace, but it'll be interesting to learn where the old Anakin and Luke lightsaber was for well over 30 years.

"It must have soft-landed."

(worked in Star Trek III)

You see something fall when the gate opens under Luke and he falls onto the antenna vane. I always figured that was his hand/saber even thought the odds of it falling down the exact same path are somewhat slim.

The Emperor had retrieved it in the EU so I figure something similar happened here.

I watched the whole panel streaming on the official site and the trailer (twice so far), and I am loving what I am seeing and hearing.
I loved seeing BB-8 and the new Stormtroopers. I think I already love BB-8. I just hope they don't sell any kind of remote controled BB-8s because I don't know if I could resist that.
I loved seeing the new and old cast together on stage, although it was shame Harrison Ford couldn't be there. I'm definitely getting the feeling that Rey, Poe, and Finn are pretty much the new Luke, Leia, and Han.
Loved the trailer. I love how they are keeping things recognizable, but at the same time they are updating things like the Stormtroopers, and Tie fighters.
Random thoughts about the trailer:
Love the new Stormtrooper, X-Wing, and Tie-Fighter designs.
Love Kylo Ren's look.
Luke's voice over was awesome.
Were the Tie Fighters attacking the Stormtroopers? That was what it looked like.
R2!!!
I wonder who was getting the lightsaber? I know Luke was talking about his sister, but no offense to Carrie Fisher, but that hand looked like it belonged to someone younger than her. Could it have been Rey, perhaps? It did look feminine to me.
HAN AND CHEWIE!!!!!!

I believe I let out a little *squee* at one point. Awesome trailer.
Gave a feeling of the epic adventure that awaits us all, without spoiling anything.

Q2

PS *I do believe I may have dribbled a bit in excitement too - sorry.... about the chair ...

For a few brief moments I was about nine years old all over again, getting excited and imagining my parents smiling at the new trailer.

And yeah, Hasbro will market the crap out of BB-8 with a bunch of figures and other toys. They'll market anything from the franchise, but a new droid shaped like a ball? He'll be everywhere.

In that passage, Luke mentions his father, himself, his sister, and then says "you have that power, too"... which has to be a fourth person, probably the one whose hand you refer to.

Everyone was wondering if Rey was going to be Han and Leia's daughter, but now after this trailer I'm wondering if she's Luke's.

This could potentially be the greatest Star Wars film since Empire. Maybe not, but what I'm seeing and hearing so far is very impressive and J.J. and Lawrence Kasdan seem like they want to shake up the Lucas universe with this story.

Amazingly cool second teaser.

Favorite moment? A VAST COLOSSAL CRASHED STAR DESTROYER SITTING IN THE DESERT. I loved that slow tracking shot slowing revealing more and more of it until you finally see it's a G-D S-D!!!

I feel it's almost sexist that we get Luke's voice and Han's face but not a single showing of Leia...

Minor minor nit: I really wish Han had been wearing his classic outfit. That would have made it perfect.

It's the conversation he has with Leia in RoTJ, just rearranged a bit.

LUKE
You're wrong, Leia. You have that power too. In time you'll learn to
use it as I have. The Force is strong in my family. My father has
it...I have it...and...my sister has it.

Yeah, it's dialogue from the Ewok village in ROTJ and doesn't appear to specifically refer to any unknown fourth character in the new movie.

Well it certainly could, as that is the implied meaning behind the handing over of the lightsaber - passing the torch if you will.
