Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

I almost mentioned that point myself. A Force ghost gets winded and needs to sit down for a rest? Obviously becoming one with the living Force doesn't include any health plan.

In ESB when we first see his ghost (ANH had the ghost but as a disembodied voice), he's pretty much standing still in one spot, as well.

I wonder if we'll see force ghosts in the new movie. While Obi-Wan and Anakin might be problematic unless they use Mcgregor and Christensen, I don't think Yoda will be too hard (Frank Oz can at least do the voice). The Force ghosts were of course largely written out of the post-ROTJ Expanded Universe pretty much at the start, but this being a brand new continuity and all...

There's also the possibility of Luke, Leia or other force users becoming force ghosts in the new film trilogy. Just speculation though.

We could also theoretically see Qui-Gon's Force ghost, since he was one of only four Jedi we know of who learned how to become one with the Force and survive physical death. We heard his voice in Episode II, he was communicating with Yoda in Episode III and we both saw and heard him in several episodes of The Clone Wars.

Even Obi-Wan's Force ghost doesn't look as good, at least during the sequence where he tells Luke about Anakin's past and reveals Leia is his sister. There are moments you can clearly tell its Alec Guinness physically sitting next to Mark Hamill, even casting shadows.

God, that shit sucks.

Never mind the fact that Obi-Wan's ghost pushes the branches and twigs aside as he walks into the scene and begins speaking to Luke. I mean come on, yeah, we know from paranormal stories that ghosts can move physical objects but it shouldn't look like that. The Anakin, Yoda and Obi-Wan ghosts in the final scene of the movie look fantastic and are the best Force spirits of the entire Star Wars universe.

This one, yeah - not so much. Clumsily executed to say the least.

It's funny you criticize that aspect, because it was one I always liked about that scene. To each their own, I guess.

I also wonder why people blame the director for the look of certain shots. I bet that it's the director of photography. Peter Suschitzky for Empire, and Alan Hume for Jedi. Just look at the resumes of both, and see the difference already.

Well, the whole idea of the ghost sitting down was !

"More powerful than you can possibly imagine"?

Well, I can imagine quite a bit!

And now you're telling me ghosts can't even sit down???

This deal is getting worse all the time!

I liked the Luke/Obi-Wan scene. I'm definitely glad he didn't just stand in one place for it. I always just figured that a Force Ghost is different than a normal ghost, and never got bothered by him sitting down or anything.

I don't know about moving the branches and whatnot, but one could rationalize that he sat down to make Luke feel more comfortable. It started as a tense scene, and Ben had some exposition laden with shocking revelations to lay on Luke.

"That's the deal, pray I don't alter it any further."

He had a lot on his mind, so he needed to sit. He was sending Luke off to kill Vader, which meant he had to contemplate the consequences of what he'd set in motion... namely having to suffer the eternal damnation of listening to that little twit Anakin whine on and on about Obi-Wan "cutting off a few limbs" and "causing massive third degree burns over 90% of his body" and how it wasn't fair.

I suppose if you spent more than 13 years dealing with Anakin's constant bitching and whining you knew what to expect when talking to a male Skywalker and Ben knew there was a pretty good chance he'd need to sit because Luke would say something incredibly annoying. Even the dead have limits with their tolerance and patience.

The shot from Jedi has just flat, impotent lighting. If Marquand were talented, he would have mirrored the lighting and composition from the cave shot in Empire, because the Dark Side is swirling within Luke by this point (he's just too reckless and arrogant to realize it -- remember, his cunning plan to rescue Han was to murder the fuck out of everybody) and in a little bit he's going to have to come to the absolute brink before he can actually save himself and his father. Would have been a nice bit of foreshadowing. (But, again, it would have required a better director and cinematographer.)

I'm not sure that's really a fair comparison. ESB was kinda supposed to be darker and more mysterious, and so the cinematography clearly reflected that. Obviously it would have been cool if the story for ROTJ continued in that same dark and dramatic style, but it didn't, and so they clearly needed a different cinematography that could reflect the generally fun and lighthearted tone of this story-- which was much more in the swashbuckling adventure spirit of ANH than anything like ESB.

And I also think it's a stretch to suggest that the dark side was "swirling around" in Luke by that point. There's obviously a point towards the end when he was tempted and it seems like he might succumb, but I definitely wouldn't say he's on the tipping point throughout the whole movie (for starters, the movie and characterizations in this movie just aren't nearly that complex).

Hey after how he looked in ESB, I'm just glad he grew his beard out a bit more and finally looked more like his ANH self again. :p

I saw that report earlier today on Facebook. If it does wind up being true then that would be a very interesting development to say the least and get some fans pretty excited.

Looks like it's official. I was hoping for Tatiana Maslany, who was also testing for the part, but Felicity Jones is certainly talented as well.

Also interesting who she's rumored to play:
a slightly older, live-action version of Sabine from Rebels

That would be cool, although if they were going to do that, I think there's another female character fans would rather see.

"This might come as a shock considering what all the actors have been saying but not everyone is entirely happy with the way the movie is heading. Several people have told me they feel like they are just ‘going over old ground’ with the things they are being asked to work on. The feeling is that The Force Awakens is a rehash of the original movie and doesn’t have enough new ideas in it."

I call BS, but reading this did make me feel uneasy.
