Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Well, then it would just a fugly insult to decent fans everywhere. :p

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

I remember having some angst at the TMP Enterprise refit. The nacelle, pylon, and deflector changes were fairly radical. But now it's my second-favorite Federation ship design, after the original design, so it definitely grew on me.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

I like the refitted 1701 and Enterprise-A main deflector designs a lot more than I do those on most later Federation starships, all the subsequent Enterprises included. None of the later ones come close except perhaps the Enterprise-D because I grew so used to and liked the appearance of the TNG ship over the course of the seven years the show was on the air.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

I will say there was something cool about having just a simple, old-fashioned radar dish on top of this beat-up, clunky looking scifi spaceship. Kind of gave it a bit of that retro scifi feel which I've always loved.

But the new dish (or I guess I should call it antenna now?) does have a pretty cool shape to it as well, so I'm sure I'll get used to it pretty quickly.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

A lot of cars look at least a little different after 30-plus years, and especially after they sustained damage and required repairs and/or a component upgrade. Let's not forget the Falcon was already an aging freighter when Han won her from Lando in the game of sabacc so it's not as if she was anything close to factory-fresh at the time of the OT. Han and Chewie probably turned her inside out during the years they owned her and left little in the original manufacturer's condition.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Ugh, Abrams using thrawn would suck. I don't want them to adapt any of the EU elements. Thrawn is the best villain in the SW Universe (I like him even better than Vader, especially since what Lucas did to make Anakin such a whiny ass has kind of rubbed off on Vader's original awesomeness for me). If Abrams is going to ruin Star Wars, he should ruin it his own way. Don't drag much better people's characters through the mud. I don't want Thrawn, or for that matter I don't want Luke with Mara Jade (who is my second favorite SW character) or Han and Leia together. If old Luke is in the movie, don't have him married or find someone else to hook him up with. Have Han and Leia married to random other people. The EU is probably going to be killed by this anyway, they might as well not try to ruin the work of Timothy Zhan and all the other great Star wars writers. Abrams doesn't deserve to ruin great character like mara, or Leia/Han's family. He shjould just make his own characters to screw up. Him using EU characters or concepts would be like if JJ Trek had a scene where Nero tested out his planet destroying red goo on Bajor before destroying Vulcan, just as an FU to DS9 fans.

If Abrams is taking Star Wars down, he should at least not be a big enough ass to specifically try to ruin some of the great non Lucas creations/stories.

What seems to be your fucking problem with Abrams?:vulcan:

And who do you think can do a better job?

That post is probably old enough to be classified as ancient. In the past 9 months, I've become hopeful and actually excited for the new Star wars movie, and generally just been posting about how interesting/cool the stuff we're seeing has been or thoughts on the rumors. Maybe you should read through more of the thread before responding to posts made three quarters of a year ago. :vulcan:

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

kirk's more positive and open-minded and he's come a long ways. Give him credit where it's rightfully due.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

I believe that if it had been rectangular to begin with, no one would bat an eye. People would be saying that circular looks wrong.

The Falcon has several different versions over the the films of the OT anyway - and the various models, the full size sets for ANH and ESB, and the matte painting, all have noticeable differences between them.

So, basically, Han's always been modding and changing it, as long he's owned it. It'd be more of a problem if it was suddenly identical to one of the previous movie's versions in every detail.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Well to be fair, the previous changes (like the two extra landing gear or the more detailed cockpit interior) were much less noticeable than this.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Yes, but this change actually makes sense in universe.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Well to be fair, the previous changes (like the two extra landing gear or the more detailed cockpit interior) were much less noticeable than this.

But considerably less time elapsed between the previous three movies than has passed between Jedi and this one, so it's not unreasonable that the ship has changed more over those intervening years.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Well as I said before, I have no problem with the change myself. I'm just recognizing that it's a much bigger and more noticeable change than the previous ones we've seen.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

If an already-battered, aging Corellian ship that Han and Chewie had already made a lot of modifications to even before Episode IV didn't have some visible changes to its external configuration or even some internal details in the 30-plus years between the OT and Episode VII then that would be the strange thing. Most hotshot car owners who like to drive their classic vehicles change at least something over the course of several decades as cool new options and features make themselves available.

A Millennium Falcon that hadn't changed at all since the end of Return of the Jedi would be the real oddity for fans to explain away.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Well given that we first saw the Falcon back in the prequels, it's got to be the equivalent of someone today driving around in a car from the 40s or something. Although presumably ships like that were built to be a lot more sturdy and long-lasting than any car.
