Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

Our overconfidence was our weakness.

In our defense, it's not like any of the specific film characters who qualify as cyborgs are actually referred to as cyborgs in the films. The opening crawl of ROTS misses a golden opportunity to call Grievous a cyborg and instead refers to him as the "droid leader", which is OK only because he leads droids.

You don't think Fox wouldn't want a slice of untouched-original-trilogy cash? They'd be pretty stupid not to come to an arrangement with Disney on this one.

Fox did put them out on DVD with the special editions. And in any event Fox didn't finish putting the prequels out in 3D, which I thought was rather odd.

This is true. I guess Lucas and McCallum thought: "well, the fans are smart enough after almost 30 years of these movies to realize Grievous is a cyborg like Vader so why point out the obvious." Still, it wouldn't have hurt to explain a few things here and there for those who hadn't already been introduced to General Grievous in animated form in the Tartakovsky microseries on Cartoon Network.

I think part of the reason the other films didn't get released in 3D (I think there were also plans for the OT as well) was due partially to the sale to Disney and also because TPM3D didn't do too well (Also there was never a blu-ray release of that either although both the bluray and 3D of Phantom have the replaced Yoda).

Kind of wondering now if TFA will be 3D...

TPM in 3D pushed the movie into the billion dollar league and it was realeased in the winter. Fox still owns the rights to the first six movies they can do still make money off of them for a while yet.

They rights are kind of a mess. They only own ANH in perpetuity and I'm not even sure what that includes other than distribution. Everything else reverts back to lucasfilm and Disney in 5 years.

Looks pretty good, kind of like Mal and GOTG's Star Lord, characters he no doubt inspired.

Distribution is huge, though, because that means any release, be it theatrical, home video, streaming, whatever, has to go through Fox. It's also quite possible that Fox's archives contain the only usable prints of the movie that still survive today, outside of Lucas' own Technicolor dye transfer print of the original. (And you don't even want to use prints as a restoration source unless it's the absolute last resort.)

Sadly, Star Wars isn't alone when it comes to this. No camera negatives survive for films like Dr. Strangelove, Citizen Kane, Rashomon, MASH, Seven Samurai, Stagecoach and about a third of The Godfather.

You can never have too many new photos of the Falcon.

(guess JJ was lying to us with his note that Falcon wasn't in this movie ;-) )

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Ugh, Abrams using thrawn would suck. I don't want them to adapt any of the EU elements. Thrawn is the best villain in the SW Universe (I like him even better than Vader, especially since what Lucas did to make Anakin such a whiny ass has kind of rubbed off on Vader's original awesomeness for me). If Abrams is going to ruin Star Wars, he should ruin it his own way. Don't drag much better people's characters through the mud. I don't want Thrawn, or for that matter I don't want Luke with Mara Jade (who is my second favorite SW character) or Han and Leia together. If old Luke is in the movie, don't have him married or find someone else to hook him up with. Have Han and Leia married to random other people. The EU is probably going to be killed by this anyway, they might as well not try to ruin the work of Timothy Zhan and all the other great Star wars writers. Abrams doesn't deserve to ruin great character like Mara, or Leia/Han's family. He should just make his own characters to screw up. Him using EU characters or concepts would be like if JJ Trek had a scene where Nero tested out his planet destroying red goo on Bajor before destroying Vulcan, just as an FU to DS9 fans.

If Abrams is taking Star Wars down, he should at least not be a big enough ass to specifically try to ruin some of the great non Lucas creations/stories.

What is it with people like you and your hatred of Abrams? And who do you think could do better jobs with both Star Wars and Star Trek? Shaking up Star Trek by getting rid of Vulcan was an awesome thing-was he supposed to just let things be to suit you and everybody else trapped in the past?

As it is, I'll be keeping aways from the 'Net myself with regards to the coming trilogy

I seriously doubt that there will be any "Legends" EU elements in the movies. Although AOTC and ROTS used some elements from the EU such as some of the comic book Jedi, but that was back when Lucas was in charge, and the cameos didn't really affect the story that much. Also the original EU had the Republic and what was left of the Empire mostly at peace by the time this movie takes place, and it's clear the Empire is still around in some form from the trailer.

The EU had it's place, and at most you might see a few references to planets and species first debuted in the EU, but you won't likely see any characters.

^
This. I can't imagine more than passing references to EU names, technology and locations will be used from here on out. They'll be acknowledged, but don't expect them to be used in the same context as they were in the books, graphic novels and video games.

As per the new pics of the Falcon:

:adore:

She's just as gorgeous a piece of junk as I remember from my childhood.

There is however a "new" EU that's stated by Disney to be canon (With the only older SW stuff being canon being the first six films and the Clone Wars CGI stuff). Rebels, the latest novels and the upcoming Marvel series are said to be part of the new 'official' canon.

Yeah, any novels preceding the new run of books that are just being released are now part of the "Legends" category of newly-unofficial adventures and storylines. The only pre-2012 and Disney takeover material that's canon are the six original films and The Clone Wars along with its theatrical feature. I'm not even sure if the live-action Ewok movies produced by Lucas in the mid-80s retain any canonical elements even though they're actually on film, used live actors and Lucas had a direct hand in making them.
