Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

And while it's a no-brainer that they wouldn't change an iconic hero ship like the Falcon, there have been no new fighter designs in the SWU in the past 30 years?

I'm sure there will be. But why spill the beans on new ships more than a year out? Star Trek was different because it was a reboot. This is a continuation of the original trilogy, that is exactly what this teaser tells us.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Big action scenes and chemistry aside, there were more subtle things about the original trilogy - how the people act - that I always liked, that made the galaxy feel real. Like when Han and Leia are in the Anoad system looking at a screen figuring out where to go from there. We never see the screen, just the light as it reflect's on Han's face. Even after he has decided where to go, he files through one or two more images before shutting the monitor off, and the light on his face from the monitor is gone. It's so subtle, but it just is an extra bit of realism..their technology is just as familiar to them as ours is to us, and the people making the film hardly need to show us everything. Ford's acting really sells it.

Agreed. There was a real sense of naturalism in the OT that was almost completely missing from the prequels. It felt like the OT characters really inhabited those worlds, and we were simply peeking in on them as they were going about their usual business. And we saw and learned only as much as we really needed to, to understand the story.

In the prequels not only did it feel like Lucas was showing off every new planet or CG environment we encountered (almost none of which felt like real places), but he had to over-explain every little detail and show us every arriving ship, etc.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

At least Episode I filmed a significant chunk of the movie (Tatooine) on location in North Africa much like the original film, and while there was a metric ton of CGI inserted into as much of the Podrace and Mos Espa marketplace sequences as they could, The Phantom Menace has a more natural, real world feel to a good part of it than Episodes II and III did. Say what one wants about Episode I and its failings, but it felt a lot more like the Original Trilogy than either of the two films that followed.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

The same Tattoine locations were used for Eps. II and III and Italian locations were used again for Naboo in Ep. II. Given the 200 million dollar budget for Ep. VII I imagine it'll tons of CGI as well, there's plenty of CGI in that short trailer.

Agreed. But keep in mind, TPM had a HUGE amount of practical FX in it, and was shot on film. AOTC and ROTS were shot in digital, plus the latter was shot entirely on a sound stage (there literally wasn't any location shooting whatsoever).

^

I almost mentioned those factors in my previous post, especially shooting the movie on celluloid and not with cutting-edge digital cameras and other equipment. The look shows, as there's a grain and texture to Episode I that makes the movie feel more....real, I guess. As if the bright, hot twin suns of Tatooine were affecting the camera lens and film stock as they recorded the actions of Qui-Gon, Shmi and Anakin in and around Mos Espa. It was a more tactile and organic film that in spite of its many, many faults was just a warmer and more soothing visual experience.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Honestly, I'm a little shocked how many people are mad that we didn't get more footage, or plot details. I'm actually amazed we got as much footage as we did. I was half expecting it to be just a logo or maybe one or two shots of characters or ships. I can guarentee we'll get plenty of trailers with tons of footage over the next year.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Was anyone else reminded of Spaceballs with the first scene from the new SW trailer?

I thought it was another fan trailer at first!

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

How much time there is until the film's release doesn't excuse the ridiculous mistake of releasing the trailer without having first provided at least SOME context by which to judge said trailer.

I want to be excited by what we saw, but there's no context for it, so the most I can muster is a feeling of 'intrigued', and that's mainly because of the designs.

Not with the actors, but they did composit in material that was shot in several places including Phuket and Mt. Etna.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

You do remember that the very first Star Trek VI teaser had absolutely no footage from that movie, right? It was a tapestry of clips from TOS and the five previous films superimposed over the hull of the refitted Enterprise as filmed for TMP and reused in TWOK. It's one of the most memorable and effective movie teasers I've ever seen, and it gets almost universally positive reviews from fans.

We're still a year away from the movie's premiere. There'll be a lot more theatrical and TV trailers between now and then, so a lack of context right now doesn't mean much if anything at all. We got images to convey an atmosphere and create a sense of excitement over the first Star Wars movie featuring the original cast in more than 30 years.

It wasn't meant nor designed to be a story context teaser, but to....tease. Literally. No explanations for anything we saw. Just visual candy that accomplished what it set out to do.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Yeah, I'm really not getting the complaints about the lack of "context". I think some folks don't know the difference between a "teaser" and a "trailer".

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

For me, the main selling point of seeing this film is the original cast reprising their roles. Seeing a quick shot or two of them would have gotten me a lot more excited than shots of characters that I don't know or care about.

For me, I thought there seemed to be a lack of "flow" or cohesion to the trailer. For such a huge film it feels like it was just thrown together last minute.

Yeah but it's not the same. Sure the Mustafar shotes looked cool.. but none of them looked as cool as Maul Vs. Qui Gon in the desert with the sun beating down, robes flowing

Then the trailer itself would have been all about that.

Instead, it's only about the look, feel, and tone.. it's a first trailer.. and JJ wanted to convince us that old-style Star Wars is back as a setting.
