Star Wars Episode 7 - 2015

I'd heard the term "Soft Reboot" used a lot in recent years. Which I would think would be a Retcon. My whole point is these are just terms made up by fans. Even among fans there is not an agreed upon consensus of what the real definitions are.

They aren't made up by fans. A soft reboot would be the Daniel Craig Bond. A full reboot would be the new Battlestar Galactica TV show, using the basic premise.

A retcon would be finding out decades after her death, The Green Goblin had fathered children with Gwen Stacey.

There is no overlap.

LOL! In Brosnan's films she was the new M meeting Bond for the first time. In Craig's she was M before Bond was even 007! Plus umm spoilers from the new movie.... That is a total reboot. Other franchises have rebooted totally and had actors returning to the same parts. But with no continuity to their previous appearances.

There is a very long list of this happening, in fact a few years ago I even created a thread about.

EDIT

In the case of Bond, every movie could be seen as a soft reboot-- otherwise how could he be around for nearly fifty years. :D

A total reboot would be using ALL new actors. So, no. It's still a soft reboot. Dench was there to ease the transition.

Now, you're getting confusing. Are you saying that they just rebooted James Bond, again, in the last movie? So, Casino Royale was a reboot AND Skyfall was another reboot?

If that's what you're arguing, you're wrong.

Casino Royale was a soft reboot, Skyfall is merely a continuation of it. The inclusion of the Aston Martin is an example of what its a soft reboot--it sorta is acknowledges Bond's prior adventures.

Pretty much.

More accurately, I would say every time a new Bond is cast it's a soft reboot, and Craig is no different than the others. Aside from the fact that they wanted to establish in his first movie that he had just made 00 status.

Casino Royale was a reboot. Doesn't matter if the same actors are in the same roles, it was a new story and new beginning for the Bond franchise. M wasn't a woman in the original Bond movies. Judi Dench is just a very good M and I could see why they would want to keep her in that role.

The Craig films have been the hardest reboot of the series, in that they make Casino Royale include an 'origin' for Bond, while previous films pretty much just had the new Bond show up as if he was always there. Likewise, a slightly bigger deal has been made about introducing or reintroducing the supporting cast.

If Pierce Brosnan had played Bond again in Casino Royale and it showed Bond becoming 007, that I could have seen calling a Soft Reboot.

On M in Skyfall. It just confirms this was not set in the same continuity as Brosnan's film. "M" is just a title. I would argue she was not even really playing the same person.

Re: the Bond thing, 007 Legends establishes that at least six of the previous Bond films - or at least the events thereof - did happen to Daniel Craig's James Bond, and that they took place between the events of Quantum of Solace and Skyfall.

No Daniel Craig's Bond is a full Reboot! That one is really obvious. See this proves my point!

Soft reboot. The movies are based in the idea that Bond is a code name and new people take the name. The previous Bond movies were about his predecessors.

Now, I haven't seen Skyfall yet--don't know if that contradicts my theory.

The Star Wars episode of the Muppet Show is CANON! Now Disney owns both so I am hoping Luke's cousin Mark Hamill finally appears.

Shmi Skywalker had a sister named Dorthy who married a man with the last name Hamill and had a son. He is the OTHER another.
