Star Wars canon

My memory fails me, but wasn't Jabba just some mid-level underling in the crime empire, but over the course of the trilogy came out on top when he killed the overlord?

And I think in the CW film they said innately linked Jabba with the power of all Hutts. As in, Jabba commands all of the Outer Rim / Hutt space.

Speaking of canon, the new Clone Wars movie just invalidated the entirety of AC Crispin's Origin of Han Solo Trilogy. :( It shows Jabba as the unified leader of the Hutts 20 years before ANH, whereas in the books it shows the story of how Jabba comes to power just months/weeks before ANH. Oh well.

That trilogy, IIRC, had already run afoul of newer canon. When I finally read it last month, I was surprised how much of it contradicted (or perhaps was contradicted by) other stories.

Jabba's a mid-level Vigo in Black Sun according to the novel of Shadows of the Empire. Jabba's death in ROTJ is then described as leading to a 'land-grab' of smuggling routes/activity in Zahn's Heir to the Empire with Talon Karrde taking a big chunk.

Wired story on the "Keeper of the Holocron"

Read this article yesterday. Although I'm not much of a SW fan beyonf the first two of the original movies, I found it to be very interesting stuff.

It would have been nice if the ST folks had set something like this up back around twenty years ago (or earlier).

If that's the case, Episode One already invalidated the novels, since Jabba seemed to already be pretty powerful and established at the Podrace.

the fans do take a much different approach to canon/non-canon in the Star Wars universe, don't they? I mean, how did everyone know the cute and cuddly creatures in the forests of the moon of Endor were called Ewoks? It was never mentioned in the film.

The credits list actors as Ewoks.

Wicket's name was never mentioned either, 'cept in the credits.

I had no trouble with Jabba's TPM appearance, he's just opening a race and we have no clue how powerful he is. But the CW movie basically says Jabba controls the entire Outer Rim!

After reading the novelization, it is still vague enough that a retcon is not going to be too difficult for Chee. It's a lot easier than the timeline headache he'll have getting the series to fit in with established continuity when all is said and done.

Nathan Butler said it pretty well in his podcast. Let's all just enjoy the stories on TV for what they are, and we can fit everything into the canon jigsaw later.

Lucas' most recent (and most entertaining) statement on "canon:"

George Lucas said:
"I am the father of our Star Wars movie world - the filmed entertainment, the features and now the animated film and television series," he says. "And I’m going to do a live-action television series. Those are all things I am very involved in: I set them up and I train the people and I go through them all. I’m the father; that’s my work. Then we have the licensing group, which does the games, toys and books, and all that other stuff. I call that the son - and the son does pretty much what he wants." He laughs. "Once in a while, they ask a question like ‘Can we kill off Yoda?’, things like that, but it’s very loose. Then we have the third group, the holy ghost, which is the bloggers and fans. They have created their own world. I worry about the father’s world. The son and holy ghost can go their own way."

In the name of the Father, the Son and the Blue Glowy Holy Force Ghost. Amen.

Jabba was never in Black Sun. That was another Hutt who was in Black Sun.

The last poster just summed up Lucas's position. There are his movies (which is official canon), there the expanded universe, and there's the fans universe. What happens in the expanded universe doesn't affect GL's universe but he can take elements from them, like Aayla Secura. Vos was actually supposed to appear and be killed in ROTS but the scene was dropped. He is referred to in dialogue though so Vos is what I call "Canon in Name Only."

so, there's 2 Hutts called Jabba who live on Tatooine, who have Boba Fet working for them and have a grudge with Han Solo? sure...

Since we are dealing with a fictional universe, people can decide for themselves what they consider canon.

As DarthPipes said, Jabba Desiliijic Tiure was never a member of the Black Sun Syndicate. Xizor's criminal empire was a separate entity from Jabba's empire.
