Star Wars Books Thread

Has anyone read any of the new TFA short stories? I want to read "Before the Awakening" to learn more about Rey, Finn, and Poe. Of the mini e-stories the only one that sounds particularly interesting is the Crimson Corsair one. Maybe I'll just buy that one.

I finished the Battlefront novel today. I didn't like the first third or so but it definitely picked up after that and the soldiers became individual characters rather than stereotypes. I enjoyed seeing a military progression of the war between Yavin and Endor.

I'm going through aftermath right now, and its ok. Definitely not as bads as some people try to say it is. The writing style is a bit weird, and off putting at times, but overall its ok. Not as good as Tarkin or 90% of the old EU, but entertaining enough.

I finished Aftermath yesterday. It was decent. I liked most of the characters, and the story was interesting. The interludes were ok, but the last 2-3 didn't keep my attention. I especially want to read more about

Han and friends retaking Kashyyyk and the orphan traveling back to Coruscant

The writing style was a bit off putting at times, but I don't think it justifies the horrible reviews. Overall, compared to the other new books I've read, its a distant third after Tarkin and Lords of the Sith, but still pretty good. I'll definitely read the other Aftermath books that are apparently coming out.

^^
The next book cover shows the Millennium Falcon and it's called "Life Debt", so hopefully the primary plot is about that.

That would be really cool. It was definitely an interesting interlude, and just begged to have the whole story told.

USA Today has a cover reveal, and some new details on the upcoming novel, Bloodlines. Here's their brief description of the plot:
USA Today said:
Leia (played by Carrie Fisher in the movies) is professionally at a good place, as a senator and leader in a peaceful New Republic decades after the fall of Vader and the Emperor's stranglehold on the galaxy. However, Gray says that a new generation doesn't remember the lessons of the Rebellion or recognize the wrongs of the Empire, and Leia begins to see the cracks in the foundation that could lead to a dangerous future for the galaxy.
Sounds like it could be pretty good to me.

I just got the movie novelization from the library! Can't wait to read the new bits!

Glad to hear we're getting a novel that will star one of the Big Three in the inter-trilogy era!

Sweet! I also got "Before the Awakening" from the library! Now I can find out who Rey's parents are!

I read the Finn and Rey stories in "Before the Awakening". Neither one were particularly memorable or revealing.

The Poe story in "Before the Awakening" was much more interesting than the other two. It really went into the relationship between the New Republic, the Resistance, the First Order, and the stalemate between everyone. Also a strong appearance for Leia.

I read the first half of the movie novelization, and it kinda ruins the energy and joy of the movie. It makes the story and characters so much more duller than the filmed version.

I wonder if this ongoing Poe comic is going to throw the "Before the Awakening" story out the window. That short established that Poe did only ONE mission with the Resistance prior to the movie! Also, I'm reading the movie novelization and it contradicts the Finn "Before" story. In the Before story, Finn is an outstanding trooper that Phasma hopes will become a commander, and is disappointed when he shows loyalty to his brothers and hesitancy to kill. Yet in the novelization, Phasma says he's entirely unremarkable and never had a black spot on his record.

I'm not to surprised. As much as they like to talk about keeping everything consistent, little things like that always seem to slip through.
I think Poe was also supposed to have been a New Republic pilot, so the comic might cover that bit of his history rather than his time with the Resistance.

Yes, in the short story Poe was an accomplished Republic pilot, who then joins the Resistance. But personally I'm a lot more interested in Resistance missions than Republic, since the NR basically refused to actually fight the First Order :scream:

Book-Rey is so much less interesting than Movie-Rey. She basically displays no joy or awe whatsoever. She doesn't care about meeting someone from the Resistance, or hearing about Luke, or meeting Han Solo, or flying the Falcon, or fixing the bypass...
