Star Wars Bluray question.....

For a while now, I've been thinking about getting the Star Wars Bluray boxset.
I would love to get some feedback from the forum about video and audio quality, but also about the movies themselves.

Is the OT the Special Edition we already got a dvd years ago, or have there been more changes? I know there are deleted scenes, but have they been edited into the movies, or are they just extras?

And what about the PT? Are there any changes in those movies, or are they just the same version we already have on dvd?

And ofcourse, the extra's. I have the Special Edition OT boxset on dvd, with the bonusdisc full of extras, and the PT as single two-disc versions, where the second disc has all the extras for each movie. Are there any extras we've never seen before?

More changes. Some truly terrible ones.

Just as extras.

Ostensibly the same apart from CGI Yoda in Ep I. Some other minor tweaks that are harder to notice. At least one crummy editing change in Ep II.

Yes. And a lot of older "classic" extras that have not been collected at any point on DVD.

( This is just what I've heard, I haven't watched them yet. )

They made the door of Jabba's palace bigger. They added a Dug to the palace.

They put a rock in front of R2 when he's hiding in ANH.

The most egregious change is that when Luke is getting electrocuted in ROTJ, Vader now goes "Noooooooo!!!!"

In the theatrical version, there is a screen-wipe transition to show a closeup of his hand as he crawl along the ground. ALL video version use a jump cut. When the film was first released I found a bootlegger who somehow made a high quality DVD of the film an dhtat has the original version of the shot

This one's troublesome because Lucas' screen-wipes are often taken to suggest the passage of an indeterminate amount of time, whereas a jump cut is often taken to mean that little or no time has passed. So I find myself wondering if the change was meant to compress the time frame ( which would have the side effect of turning up Palpatine's hyperspace speed from Insane Speed to You've Gotta Be Kidding Speed ).

To be honest, I would just wait. There's reports that Disney has done a full 4k UltraHD restoration of the Original Trilogy (non-SE). Extras-wise the Blu-Ray set is nowhere near comprehensive (certainly not on the level of Fox's Alien Anthology).

At some point, somebody (be it Lucas, Abrams or Disney) needs to rebuild the Prequel Trilogy from the raw takes up and do extended editions with the live-action elements upscaled to 4k, CGI brought up to UltraHD standard and the John Williams music totally redone. I'm convinced there are, if not great movies, at least better movies in there somewhere.

You're right for the most part, but the wipes also tend to be aesthetic in origin.. the wipe to the closeup of Anakin's skeleton hand looked fantastic. When I saw that it was now a jumpcut, it just didn't look as good

I'm pretty sure the DVD had the jump cute.

But I just checked the blue ray and you are right.

The audio and video are incredible. I actually watched it side-by-side with a DVD when I first got it and I was blown away. Some of the changes are ridiculous, but it's Lucas's prerogative, so whatever.

I've read conflicting stories, usually concluding that there's not 4K UltraHD--particularly non Special Edition coming in the near future, if ever.

I might just invest in this bluray set. Upgraded video/audio is a nice bonus, and Im not sure I'll ever buy a tv big enough to justify 4K.

I would recommend trying to find it used or on sale. In my area there are lots of used music/movie/book stores, and I see it fairly often. Or there's always ebay and Amazon marketplace.
