Star Wars blu-ray release date announced tommorow?

Whofan

Fleet Captain
Multiple sites are reporting that there's going to be a Star Wars announcement at the Panasonic booth at the CES (consumer electronics show) convention.

Word is it's going to be either the blu-ray's release date announcement (Previous Lucasfilm DVDs have arrived in the fall, so I would expect that) or, somewhat less interesting, a look at The Phantom Menace 3D theatrical release.

Yeah, apparently a Vader and some stormtroopers are being sent for the presentation. I also expect it to the Blu-ray announcement.

I bought the DVD box set with the non-special editions as "special features" early last year, so I don't plan on a Blu-ray purchase.

This will be a day long remembered.

...Okay, now that that's out of the way, I hope it's the Blu-ray. My 2004 DVD set's getting a bit long in the tooth.

I know what it won't be: a fully remastered 1080p deluxe edition of the original SW films, with the newer versions as extras.

Frankly I thought the existing versions (that were upscaled and playing constantly on SpikeHD last month) already looked pretty damn good.

Unless there's a TON of new features or something, a blueray version just isn't going to be high on my list of movies to get.

I believe the Spike version you saw is the remastered HD version that will be on Blu Ray. I believe when Lucas remastered for the DVD release the work was done at 4k so it would not need to be redone for the next version. So the HD cut has been out there. All the release is doing is making the HD version available to consumers to own at home.

Compare your DVD version to what you saw on Spike. If you are happy with the DVD version then stick with those, if you think the version you saw on Spike looks better, then you may want to consider getting the Blu Ray release.

And I will buy the Blurays... my PS3 is hungry for them since I got her.

Star Wars in 1080p!!! THIS will be a day long remembered!

The last time Lucas got any of my money was for the theatrical release version of Star Wars on DvD, and the only way I'd buy the bluray would be for the theatrical release version.

I have yet to bother with the special edition version that came with it, but I think it might be useful as a drink coaster.

As often as you keep buying it.

I haven't bought any of the Star Wars releases and I doubt I ever will; Lucas' habit of forever releasing new editions of the same fucking films is the reason why. Fuck 'em.

That doesn't make any sense. I've bought exactly one release: the original DVD release from 2004. And I'm not buying again until the original versions are released on at the very least 16x9 enhanced DVDs, preferably Blurays. I'm a little annoyed at Lucas re-releasing it over and over, but not so angry that I wouldn't buy at least one version.

I mean, the home video history of these films is pretty telling. Multiple releases on Laserdisc and VHS (also some releases on Beta and CED and even VCD). So bide your time till a release that suits your fancy comes out and buy it, and save your anger for something a little more worthwhile.

I'm not a total SE hater, in fact, when the originals were first announced for DVD, I had no problem rebuying the SE's for what I thought were going to be decent versions of the originals. It was only when I learned they were old non-anamorphic laserdisc transfers that I balked. I still have my SE DVDs and still watch them, but that's all I'm buying for now.

As for this announcement: like I said above, as much as Star Wars has meant to me over the years, I can't get excited for any more releases without decent versions of the original versions being made available. I've wanted to see deleted scenes and such for years, (at my age, I could truthfully say "decades"), but I can netflix the bonus discs if need be.

Still, fingers crossed... (hmm, I was sure we had a 'fingers crossed' smiley, maybe I'm thinking of another forum).

Yeah I've seen this on several sites, the first time I saw it was the other day on theforce.net I think it will probably be an announcement on the blu-ray. Vader being there and all I can't see it being anything else.

^ Pretty much and as long as Lucas thinks he can continue to make money on it. I'm not sure I get the anger towards Lucas. It is clear that in recent years he has become full on business man and is using his creation as all good business people would, to make money. I don't really begrudge him this. He can do what he pleases. It's up to us as responsible consumers to decide when to stop buying a particular product. I firmly believe this.

Right. It's not like he holds a lightsaber (or blaster) to our heads and make us keep buying the same movies over and over again.
