Star Wars:Alternate music

Lieutenant Commander
Some interesting clips here, showing what music they could've used:

Here's an alternate look at the sunset scene. Not quite as powerful as using the force theme, instead going for a more mysterious tone...

An alternate and more bombastic opening music for EMPIRE....

Most of the other clips relate to William's original music edits for the prequels before they were butchered in editing later on.

Unfortunately can't seem to find any clips of the alternate Vader/Luke fight music from EMPIRE. Originally, the fight, which is mostly silent musically in the film, was going to feature more triumphant music, such as a big statement of Yoda's theme when Luke gets the upper hand in the fight and knocks Vader over the Carbon freezing chamber. There was also, earlier in the film, a different musical introduction for the Imperial fleet. These can be found on the soundtrack collections released over the years.

I believe that the musical cues that you are looking for ARE available on the 1997 & 2004 releases of the soundtracks. I have the 1997 Star Wars soundtrack and the 2004 ESB and ROTJ re-releases and have those specific selections.

I read years ago that Lucas originally edited the first movie to Vivaldi's "Winter" before Williams did the score. I'd love to see a DVD release of that.

That's odd

Actually, it's surprisingly common for temp scores to be done with classical music. The score is one of the last parts of a movie that gets finished, so directors will use classical music to get a feel for what the movie will be like in its finished form. That's (partly) how 2001: A Space Odyssey ended up with a classical score, for example, as Stanley Kubrick decided he liked the classic tracks he'd picked better than Alex North's score.

It just seems weird that he would chose Vivaldi's winter...I should listen to it again
