I looked for a thread dedicated to just this film but didn't find it going back a few pages. Mods feel free to merge this with that thread if it exists.

I figured this thread would be good for concrete news.

Today it is was announced that, as far as writers go, Arntd is out and Kasdan is in, and, according to Kennedy, the story is in place!

Terrible news imo.

How are they going to meet the release date if they just scrapped his entire script and starting from scratch?

From the article, it seems that the story itself is locked in. I think they can actually write really good dialogue. Sometimes, rushing a little bit at this phase makes the product better...

Interesting news. I had a feeling this might happen after JJ took over. I'm very curious to know what exactly caused this to happen.

I'm very happy to hear that Lawrence Kasdan is returning for script duties. Although GL doesn't get enough credit for writing the ESB script (Leigh Brackett's original draft was discarded and GL wrote the basic story. Kasdan made his horrendous dialogue into something good), Kasdan was a great contributor to LFL. Reading the behind-the-scenes stuff for ESB and ROTJ, he was pretty involved in the story meetings and knew his stuff.

I'm a fan of JJ but I find his movie screenwriting to be a little dodgy.

from insider sources:

"What's the big change? My sources tell me that the focus of the story has changed in a big way, that it's a whole new set of characters being followed than in the Arndt script. I don't want to say much more than that, because I just don't know how in flux things are and I'm sick of being misquoted on this stuff, but it seems like there's a complete overhaul. Top to bottom. This isn't a rewrite, this is a completely different movie with different main characters."

from what im reading, don't be surprised if this doesn't come out until 2016. pre production is in but new story new characters calls for new casting and TIME. jj likes to take his time. which is fine with me. but im not sure if im happy about this or not. kasden hasn't written much since the good ol days and dreamcatcher was junk. jj wrote super 8. also crap. not feeling so good after all. if kasdan can find it in him again it will be ok. but that's a big if.

As long as it's the Kasdan of Empire & Raiders rather than the Kasdan of RotJ & Dreamcatcher I'm happy. Of course this is probably just a dialogue polish like on Empire. There's no time to start all over again. Considering he had much more influence on Jedi's script than he had Empire's it's just as well that he's not starting this sucker from scratch.

Im not anticipating this movie at all. Mainly two reasons: The prequels removed that from my SW thought process. The idea of mass producing tv shows and movies will surely kill the franchise off completely.

I've got a bad feeling about this...

Arndt writing the script was one of those things that comforted me. It couldn't possibly suck with such a great screenwriter, right?

Lets just say that... I don't have the same "it couldn't possibly suck, right?" sentiment about JJ Abrams' story and writing......

I just hope the new film is risky. Empire was a risky script, while Jedi ws fairly safe, and Kasden wrote both. I hope they decide to take some bold, unsafe choices.

So, all hope for VII is lost. Now that JJ is directly writing it, we'll be getting JJTrek with a different name. Oh, well. It was nice having a little bit of hope while it lasted. Still, now that it has no chance at all of being good, atleast I won't be dissappointed when the worst SW movie ever eventually comes out.

JJ didn't write his Star Trek films but I suppose I shouldn't let that stop you repeating the same crap we had to read for 2 years pending the release of Into Darkness.

And even some of the fans who hated JJTrek, have stated, that probably would've liked it if it was Star Wars, since their biggest complaint was he turned ST into SW
