Star Trek XII Release Date & Box Office Discussion Thread

Starting to think that the Star Trek sequel won't make the 6/29 release date. Only eighteen months to go and we still don't have a completed script.

The script hasn't been announced doesn't mean it's not done. They probably don't want to announce it until it's the (mostly) final draft.

Actually what was said was that they'd not even worked on it yet. My guess is that the film is gonna be pushed back to second half of 2012. Maybe even Christmas.

^ This is why it's probably going to be pushed back. I am glad for their success but maybe they could have waited until after the finished the script. I'm not panicking but I am concerned.

First of all because they already signed a contract to write the sequel and Paramount announced a release date (maybe we should blame Paramount). I look at it as making a commitment and not overestimating the amount of time one has. Orci and Kurtzman are getting ready to make their directorial debut soon. The thing is there are way too many people working on the script in the first place, I think all four of them are working on it or supposed to be. It could be just a case of not wanting to say anything until it's greenlit...but it is a slight cause for concern.

They've been writing the script for a while, if that's the thing you mean they havent worked on yet.

The other projects they were committed to were released or will be released before Star Trek XI. Thus they got priority since those scripts or whatever else needed to be done first because of production timelines. For instance M:I:4 and Super 8 are coming out this year, so J.J. was working on those first. Cowboys and Aliens is coming out this summer, so O&K naturally were going to work on that first. Then there's Fringe, which has been out for a while. The original timeline for things seems to have been that the script would be done during the winter with pre-production in the spring and production in the summer (verbatum.) It seems they've been more or less on target thus far.

The thing is there are way too many people working on the script in the first place, I think all four of them are working on it or supposed to be.

There are three people working on the script itself. O & K + Lindelof.

No, actually none of this is a problem or at all irregular.

JJ is overseeing the script since he's the executive producer and probably will direct again even though he's not announced that ; Kurtzsman, Orci, and Lindeloft are writing it but he's overseeing it and has final word on drafts so technically there are four people writing it. I never said I was in panic mode. I'm saying that there is justification to be at least a little concerned.

There are technically 3 people writing it (present tense.) J.J. is not receiving a writing credit at this point. He hasn't even seen the script yet.

We're still 18 months away and the script is probably close to being wrapped up.

But if Abrams hasn't looked at the script yet, I'd imagine they still have a ways to go before we get to a shooting script. Orci, Kurtzman and Lindelof will have to incorporate changes asked for by both Abrams and the studio. Then someone is still going to have to sit down and crunch the numbers for what it'll cost to produce the film. Then you have to make sure that the actors are actually going to be available for shooting.

While I think they can still make 06/29/12, they are quickly coming to a point where this film will have to move to the front burner for all involved.

Again...Dennis I'm on you side of the argument. I'm simply saying that there is a justification for a little concern since it was previously reported that the script would be FINISHED by Christmas. This latest news that JJ hasn't even seen it yet would trigger a logical reaction from a fan that they're still working on it. Indeed there is no reason to panic.
