Star Trek XII Pre-production.

I was just curious to know if pre-production on the movie has begun? Are they already working on costumes, props and sets and choosing filming locations even though principle photography isn't even scheduled to begin yet? I always wonder how far in advance does pre-production on a movie begin.

STXI was originally due Christmas 2008 (and although the film's release was delayed, it was still made and finished to that timetable). I think (it's not at hand so I can't double-check) much of the concept art in "The Art of the Movie" book is dated mid-to-late 2007. So about a year and a half before release is when they really get going.

I doubt they can do any concept art or other pre-production for STXII when the script isn't even done. All they've got so far (at least according to JJ) is the story outline. The director isn't even confirmed yet.

They shouldn't have started any of that yet. Once the script is done, and gets the greenlight, that's really when pre-production steps up.

They are supposed to be scripting it now. It seems with that story about Orci's iPad a couple of weeks ago on TrekMovie.com said they were showing off ideas that they had for location shoots and actress they had in mind, for what it's worth.

I imagine a lot of that stuff is somewhat concurrent especially if they've nailed down an idea. You need to make sure you get an idea of how long it would take to secure certain locations, get some numbers going, possible directors, etc.

I am sure the new bridge set and other sets that were built are also in storage somewhere.

Judging by Hollywood's tendancy these days to build, destroy and rebuild bigger and better, I can't imagine much of the sets will be reused without at least being modified

Which would be fine especially if the new movie is set a few years after the first. It seems like every Star Trek movie has a modified Enterprise.

That and the parts will be here on Tuesday.

They could do designs basically from descriptions from the writers which is what Lucas has done while was writing the script for the prequels. The script for the sequel is supposed to be done early 2011 now. Pre-Production is probably going on right now with other things. I doubt that the production team is just twiddling their thumbs until a script is finished.

Without a budget it's hard to plan or design anything. In fact, without a budget and a green light it's hard to pay anyone to design or plan anything.
