Star Trek XII: How would you do it?

This thread is like the twilight zone...

After 3 years of constant whining about the reboot/reimagining/rewhateveryouwishtocallit aspect of Trek XI, how they don't know what they are doing, how unoriginal they are and how they are erasing all the TOS episodes and scratching all our dvds...here we have a thread almost full of people asking for Abrams to remake or revisit past plots and characters

I see 3 more years of bitching in our futures...(not that we will escape it in any case if a sequel is made)

Please, please, please, no remakes of old episodes. It would be proof that Trek is out of ideas. A new regime is in power, let's see what their imaginations spit out.

Hallelujah...

Just keep the crew, the ship and the basic Trek universe established in Trek XI and do a new, never before seen story.
Preferably one where there is no single Khan/Nero like villain and where Earth is not in danger of destruction.

The fact they rebooted the franchise is proof that the people running it are out of ideas.

The fact that they rebooted the franchise is proof that they want to get rid of the restrictions of what has come before and open the way for future, fresh, new adventures with the characters they and we love. And who everyone else in the world recognizes and associates with Trek.

The Dark Knight effectively used an old enemy and made him new and interesting.
There is no reason why Trek shouldn't try something like that. It won't be your daddy's Khan for sure...

I'd love to see a retake on Where No Man Has Gone Before, but for the friendship between him and Kirk to be effective it would have needed to be seeded in this movie, or put him in the second with another story and do WNMHGB as the third movie.

Exactly, it proves that they were deluded into thinking that rebooting the franchise actually meant they were doing something new. In other words, proof that they are out of ideas.

Star Trek: At Worlds End!;)
What you said is true of course. Gary would have to be introduced earlier.

I also think the Talosians have potential. Those guys live the craziest phantasies every day. They could be made pretty interesting. It can't hurt to reuse good elements from the past. it doesn't mean the actual result would have much to do with the original.
I also think the name Khan stuck in people's heads even if they didn't watch the movie. A villain that is to be excited about by default.

Was using the Joker in TDK a "restriction"? Or wasn't it rather a very smart move ? I wouldn't want a movie series of remakes just to be sure. But even in a new television series I would personally love to see a couple of remakes from TOS. I think it would be exciting.

These characters were cut short in their primes. In TWOK Kirk was in his early 50s and already lamenting getting old.
In my opinion, going back to them is recognition that there's a lot of gold left there to mine. We've seen precious little of them at their energetic best. Compare only 79 epsiodes of TOS featuring Kirk and Spock versus around 170 episodes of VOY featuring Janeway and Tuvok. Just saying. Kirk and Spock actually have the least amount of airtime of any of the major Trek characters from TNG, VOY, DS9, or even ENT.

There's plenty left in Kirk and Spock. Plenty.

I agree with that- with the exception of Khan. Among the casual and non-fans that I know, he is universally known as the Star Trek villain (not counting the Klingons, of course). I wouldn't want a remake of Space Seed... but it would make sense to revisit the character.

The next movie should be... Star Trek: The Next Generation... with the same cast.
