Star Trek XII: How would you do it?

The Dark Captain trailer...

KHAN: "Where do we begin? A year ago Starfleet wouldn't dare cross any of you. What happened?"

MUDD: "So what are you proposing?"

KHAN: "It's simple. Kill Captain Kirk."

CAROL: "Jim, this is Ben Finney."

BEN: "Carol's told me everything about you."

KIRK: "I certainly hope not."'

KIRK: "You once told me we'd be together. Did you mean it?"

CAROL: "Jim, don't make me your only hope for a normal life."

BEN: "You're Leonard, right?"

McCOY: "That's right."

BEN: "Any psychotic ex-boyfriends I should be aware of?"

McCOY: "You have no idea."

KHAN: "Good evening ladies and gentlemen. We're tonight's entertainment."

I too would do a movie adaption of one of the original series episodes, it would go down well with the old school fans and it could provide an epic story. The Doomsday Machine being the most obvious candidate i would have thought. Something tells me they'd want some concrete established villains as well though. Maybe set it on the Federation-Klingon border and throw in a menacing Klingon captain who wants to try and take control of the machine to use it as a weapon against the Federation.

Its a fairly cliche plot idea, but the Doomsday machine was meant to serve as a parralel to nuclear weapons and mutually assured destruction, which i think would be a fitting theme in this political climate of people being worried about Iran or terrorists getting their hands on nukes.

Either way, i'd like to see a slightly more cerebral second film, plenty of action but throw a bone to the old school fans wth some minor pilosophical musings.

People might say a movie adaption of an original episode might be too repetative, but its only going to be original trek fans that will have seen it, and people in general like repetition judging by the amount of people who constantly rewatch episodes and films they have already seen.

there should be a timeline change where everything reverts back to the original series, stories, sets, ship..........

Lets see...

No more cameos by old Trek characters, no remaking of old episodes, no reappearance of old villains for a start.
No rest buttons, no reverting to the TOS sets or ship looks.
No Klingons or Romulans. At least as main villains.

I'm not quite sure what I would do as a threat or a villain but certainly it has to be something as original for Trek as possible.
I would have them introduce a couple of fresh, never before seen Federation starship classes perhaps.

Hmm, on second thought maybe I wouldn't be against doing a mirror universe movie...

I like the mirrorverse angle...

In another thread I suggested possibly looking at the TOS novels and trying to adapt them to the screen. I reckon Diane Carey's First Strike, the first book in the Invasion! series, would be quite cool; it's got Klingons, a horrible alien adversary, and big space battles. Or how about something like The Klingon Gambit or Shadow Lord; something exciting and adventurous certainly.

Failing that, I wouldn't mind seeing a remake of a classic episode. Where No Man Has Gone Before springs instantly to mind, but there's also stuff like Errand of Mercy or The Doomsday Machine.

I'd love to see "The God Thing." I'm sure those guys have more access to any material we've ever seen and it'd be interesting to see what Orci and Kurtzman could do with it.

Depending on how much information old Spock divulges to young Spock, that could be incorporated into the sequel somehow. I posted in another thread that perhaps the next movie is set quite some time later and we see a refit of the Enterprise; to something most fans are more familiar with. I also like the idea of a Mirror Universe movie, it could have some possibilities considering this movie is obviously in an alternate universe to begin with. When they return, they return to the original timeline and universe and not the one they left.

A completely non hostile bad guy type of movie would be cool with me as well, but nobody would want to see that. The more I think about it, with the way general fans are (average movie goers), a completely insane Mirror Universe movie would appeal to the masses. Particularly the skimpy female uniforms and such.

I've always thought that an expansion of A Taste Of Armageddon would be cool. Plus, it could be updated to be a reflection on society and their reliance on technology to tell them what to do every waking moment.

It would serve to show some very tense moments, almost all character-driven.

Throw in some terrorism, like a hacked-into computer to be used to control a larger, more affluent society by those who want to overthrow it, and you could have a great setup to throw our crew into.

I have a few ideas.

First, I think a big screen remake of WNMHGB could work, if done correctly. That could have an "epic" feel.

Second, I'd like to see the plot of "Errand of Mercy" expanded. IE: All out war with the Klingons. This is something we have never seen. :klingon:

Third, bringing back Khan somehow might work, again, if done correctly. However, he is much more popular and well known than most other TOS villians, so the movie would suffer as a "remake" i feel.

Fourth, and just for fun, the Enterprise should be thrown 100,000 years in the past and to the other side of the galaxy and appear in the crossfire of a battle between the Galactica and a Cylon Base Star. Then Adama and Kirk should get in a staring contest. Epic.

Also, I really don't understand why so many fans on this board want the timeline to revert back to what we know at the end of this or in another movie. It would just be a waste of what they're trying to acomplish for this movie, and it would make no sense to the new fans that they're trying to attract. If Paramount is going to keep Star Trek alive at all in the future, it will be in this "new" timeline.

Since we've rebooted . . .

How about having the TOS crew meet the Borg or the Dominion in the 23rd century?

I'd like to see a good Romulan movie in the spirit of TOS "Balance of Terror", TNG "The Defector", or TOS "The Enterprise Incident". The Romulans are better villains. They're smarter, more treacherous then the Klingons. Facing the Romulans in those episodes was like a game of chess.

What about a Star Trek "Hunt for Red October." Something like that in the Trek universe could be really cool. A cloaking device as the caterpillar? You could combine the scale of this story with elements from "The Defector" and "The Enterprise Incident."

I would drop the "revenge" angle that every Trek villain seems to go for and just create a adversary who is just a confident, cool, professional. Imagine if a personality like Benjamin Linus, manipulative and deceitful as he is, were a Trek adversary. It would be cool if the battle ended as a stalemate.

What about something like TNG "The Chase." The idea of 2 or more powers racing to unlock some ancient mystery could be cool. The Chase could be scaled up to big screen proportions. Anyone familiar with the Chodak from the old video game Star Trek: A Final Unity?

The Errand of Mercy idea is interesting. What about a more naval themed Star Trek that draws on Horatio Hornblower or Master and Commander. The way the commanders in those sorts of movies square off is cool (that type of Combat inspired Wrath of Khan). If you wanted to make the stakes higher, you could base the story around a Trafalgar type naval encounter.

I’d like to see a good romulan movie in the spirit of tng “the defector” or “balance of terror” where it’s not personal, the captains are just dedicated professionals fighting for their countries, and the captains use cunning and skill to outmaneuver eachother. Something like that master and commander movie or horatio hornblower tv series. It’s even be cool if it ended in a draw.

One thing I'd keep from this new movie . . . they have the budget to show us "Strange New Worlds". Star Wars always did a better job of that.

I don't like the Khan idea. For that to work, whoever plays Khan would have to be better than Ricardo Montalban. You wouldn't be able to get out of the shadow of that movie.

Khan: Just couldn't let me go, could you? I guess this is what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object. You truly are incorruptible, aren't you? You won't kill me out of some misplaced sense of selfrighteousness...and I won't kill you because you're too much fun. We're going to do this forever.

Kirk: You'll be in a padded cell, forever.

Khan: Maybe we can share it. They'll need to double up, the rate this galaxy's inhabitants are losing their minds...

Kirk: This galaxy just showed you it's full of people ready to believe in good.

Khan: Till their spirit breaks completely. Until they find out what I did with the best of them. Until they get a good look at the real Spock, and all the heroic things he's done. Then those Klingons will be straight back into battle and the Federation will understand the true nature of heroism.

Star Trek: The Wrath of Cannes

Breen terrorists take over a prestigious film festival and it's up to the Enterprise crew to save the day.

Well considering that we're in an alternate universe now I don't think there is really any need to adapt any of the previous stories. Introduce old concepts maybe like the Klingons (i would really like to see what J.J. and gang do for the Klingons) or Khan and just keep it in this rebooted reality. I suspect that a sequel would deal with the fallout of what happened in this movie...
