Star Trek XI Official Countdown Thread AKA Cog's Precog Blog

Samuel T. Cogley

So today is the first day of filming for Star Trek XI. It seems only fitting that the OFFICIAL countdown to the film should begin. All of this speculation and planning is finally made real by those first few thousand frames committed to film.

By my count, we have only 414 days to go until the latest and hopefully greatest Star Trek movie arrives. (Correct me if I'm wrong. Like I need to ask. ;) )

Today also marks my six-year anniversary on this board. I can think of no other way to celebrate all of the many hours of my life wasted on this board than by excitedly preparing to waste at least that many more!

Who's with me?!?

To be honest, I'm actually pretty excited about this film. I haven't heard anything yet that is a total deal-breaker. This is cause for a celebration! :D I actually busted out a bottle of champagne, and am drinking a glass right now. Why not?

Abrams has a pretty good track record. Not perfect, but not disastrous, by any means.

Insert "I hate LOST" posts below.

This is a major turning point for the Star Trek franchise. The franchise that would not die. The little engine that could. The goose that laid the golden eggs (along with quite a few copper and lead eggs, depending on how exhausted and beaten-down she was at the time.) Will the franchise rise from the ashes? Or will this be the final nail in the coffin?

This is actually a pretty exciting time to be a Trekkie. Will you cling tightly to the old? Will you jettison the old in favor of the uncertain future? Or will you try your best to embrace both worlds?

Are you willing to share Star Trek (whatever that means for you) with the rest of the world? Are you willing to let go of some of what you think Star Trek is in order to share it with enough people to make it viable again?

For the next 414 days (or until this thread sinks off the main page into oblivion, pushed off by a bunch of cock threads, damn you Cogley! ), let's share our hopes and dreams here.

Are you excited? Are you angry?

Is your childhood about to be raped? Will your opinions fluctuate wildly with every new bit of information that is released?

Are you poised to pronounce the film a success? Or are you desperate to gloat that it tanked miserably?

The community that is this forum is still in its infancy, but ties have already begun to form. Much emotion has been shared and some virtual blood has already been shed.

I suspect that the highs and lows we experience right here in this forum over the next 414 days to be far more entertaining than the final product we will be dissecting until then.

Friendships will be forged and broken. Enemies will be made. Cocks will be blocked.

And in the weeks that follow the movie's release, as the fans begin to disband and this forum is dismantled, we will look back and wonder what all the fuss was about. We'll retreat into other subforums or abandon this board entirely... until the next new Trek project is announced and we all come crawling back, like so many Regulan bloodworms.

Until then, let's vow to have one hell of a good time.

Or as Satchel Paige once said:

Post retarded comments like you don't need the money, love like you've ever kissed a girl, and dance like a naked Uhura on Nimbus III.

(Correct me if I'm wrong. Like I need to ask. )

Fear not. We'll correct you (and call you names) even if you're right.

And I'm with ya all the way, if only in the faint hope that my dream will be realized and Archer & T'Pol will be revealed as Spocks great-grandparents. Hah, take that T/T'Ps or whatever you call yourselves! :p

Re: Star Trek XI Official Countdown Thread AKA Cog's Precog

I am on board with you... with the qualification that I still think all this "cock" nonsense is really dumb and juvenille... yes even more juvenille than a 42-year-old man who calls himself "trekkie."

I, too, can't wait. I, too, am torn between craving spoilers and wanting to keep myself pure for the screening 13 months hence.

Congrats on your sixth anniversary! And major kudos for paraphrasing Satchel Paige... or even knowing who he is! Maybe you ain't all bad after all.

Re: Star Trek XI Official Countdown Thread AKA Cog's Precog

I agree too.

I also think the word "cocks" should replace "tits" for spam threads.

Quite possibly more entertaining that Season 2 of Enterprise and it didnt cost 800,000 per episode...

I second that motion.

I was thinking that very same thing yesterday.

I will put a countdown clock in my front yard and leave it there until the HOA complains. I will then use all I've learned about free speech on TNZ to keep it there.

I will wear nice conservative clothes and go around ringing doorbells in my neighborhood asking folks if they've heard the word of Roddenberry. I will give them copies of "The Making of 'Star Trek'" purchased from used book stores at my own expense.

I do honestly believe this is the most exciting thing to happen to "Star Trek" since the STMP days. (Wait. As a movie, STMP was anti-climatic, really. Not up to my expectations. I didn't care for it too much. Great. Now I'm nervous about XI again. I hope Abrams knows what he's doing. Gotta find the "I'll boycott if -- " list I made a while back.)

I will be trying to embrace both worlds. Although I'm still planning on avoiding plot spoilers, each additional casting announcement, along with the knowledge they're now filming the thing, is ramping up my excitement.

The only real negative about this film so far is the Christmas Day release. I hope they'll move it up a week or so.

Christmas Day is, in fact, a pretty big movie release day.

I know. My brother manages a movie theater and he tells me it is by far the busiest day of the year for them.

My problem with the release date is with my family obligations (doubling this year as I'm getting married between now and then) I doubt I'll be able to slip away to the theater to see it, and I don't want to have to wait another day! A midnight Christmas Eve showing might be a possibility, though....

Cogley's Log, Stardate 412 DTG (Days to Go)

Winona Ryder is announced to play Spock's mother. Responses are mixed. The biggest question on everyone's mind is "Will she try to steal the show?"

Spy photos from the set of Star Trek (allegedly) appear on line. Apparently, the followers of Landru will be featured heavily in this film.

Supplemental log entry. On Stardate 414, Bruce Greenwood was announced as the new Captain Pike. Responses were mostly favorable. The prediction is that the audience will welcome his Captain Pike as long as he hails from anywhere but Cincinnati.

Oh, and happy anniversary. ;)

I'm counting the days right along with you until we get to see time-traveling robot Spock save the Federation from the borg. Go J.J.!

Re: Star Trek XI Official Countdown Thread AKA Cog's Precog

Cogley's Log, Stardate 378 DTG:

Star Trek fandom is bitterly divided over the possibility of one or more hats appearing in Star Trek XI. With 378 days remaining, we may never make it across that finish line.

Who will reunite the fan base?

Who will explain why Captain Kirk is dressed like a bellboy?

Why did Harlan Ellison have a meltdown?

Why does Nimoy think Star Trek can never return to television? Did he watch too many episodes of "Enterprise"?

Where did it all go wrong?

So much drama...

So much intrigue...

And miles to go before we sleep.

Re: Star Trek XI Official Countdown Thread AKA Cog's Precog

These questions, and many others, will be answered on the next episode of "Soap."
