At this point some people actually have seen this film. The one's that seem to have the most to say about what doesn't work in this film have not. The math isn't terribly hard on this.

Yes, they've seen it and been kind enough to share information about it with everyone. There's also been more and more information being made available in interviews, trailers, pictures, etc from official sources. So yeah, the math is pretty easy as far as still being able to have an informed opinion about a movie despite not actually having sat through it.

So yeah, the math is pretty easy as far as still being able to have an informed opinion about a movie despite not actually having sat through it.

Except you have yet to make an informed opinion. Just a lot of sour grapes and fan bashing.

My opinion is pretty well informed, thank you. Just because I don't agree with your interpretation of the same material hardly makes your opinion any more valid than mine or vice versa.

When I heard that there was a new Trek movie coming out, I mentioned it to the "mundanes" of my acquaintance - it's a recasting of Kirk, Spock, etc. People who normally shrug at the mention of Star Trek suddenly were interested. Very good sign.

It's only good if they actually show up to see Trek and not [most likely] Wolverine and/or Terminator, which, I predict, will be even bigger than Wolverine, thanks to Christian Bale's star power.

I dunno, the "normal" folks I know might watch Star Trek but don't really think much about Wolverine or Terminator, or care about Christian Bale. All that is insider-fan stuff.

Normal people would need to be reminded that "Wolverine is a character in X-Men." Otherwise they might think...werewolf movie?

There's a crossover aspect to Star Trek that it only really shares with Star Wars and maybe Superman. It just has to deliver a movie with crossover appeal.

Oh no, they know nothing about the cast. Even saying one guy is in Heroes would mean nothing. I don't know anybody in RL who watches Heroes or Lost, I'm talking real mainstream people for whom even that stuff is too out there. People who thought Iron Man would flop because they've never heard of the guy. I wouldn't bet they've ever heard of John Cho or Simon Pegg, either.

They like the idea of seeing Kirk, Spock and the Enterprise again. They know Shatner and Nimoy are too old for the roles, so the recasting is a necessary way of giving them what they want, rather than being the attraction.

It suddenly makes it different. And if you're somebody who didn't go for the original version, a different version might be worth checking out.

It's more that TOS is all they like, or more specifically, all they know. TNG was that boring show with the bald guy. They barely know DS9, VOY or ENT exist. Kirk-Spock-Enterprise has pop-culture awareness - for a lot of people, that's what Star Trek is.
