Star Trek XI and the average joe(spoilers inside)

When I heard that there was a new Trek movie coming out, I mentioned it to the "mundanes" of my acquaintance - it's a recasting of Kirk, Spock, etc. People who normally shrug at the mention of Star Trek suddenly were interested. Very good sign.

It's only good if they actually show up to see Trek and not [most likely] Wolverine and/or Terminator, which, I predict, will be even bigger than Wolverine, thanks to Christian Bale's star power.

I have the feeling Wolverine won't do that well, period. People don't seem to be very excited about it, or at least that's the impression I've been getting.

You'd be unwise to take your own bet. But, it's your money to lose.

I've heard at least 2 different groups of non-fans talking about the new Star Trek movie in the last few weeks. It is weird cuz I never heard them talking about movies that much beforehand. Of course, I always keep quite and don't try to persuade them either way too much (except for maybe mentioning that I'm a Trekkie). I've found that trying to argue, that someone should watch something that they don't want to watch, usually makes them not want to watch it.

You'd be right. Especially if they're not inclined anyway.

Why would you try to persuade anyone? As if you're a missionary trying to proselytize new converts? That's kind of...odd.

How odd. Do you really equate expressing a feeling or stating an impression with offering a bet for money? If so, why is that? If not, perhaps you've simply quoted the wrong post and thought you were replying in a different thread?

So far, only one non-Trek fan has commented to me about being excited about the movie, and he's a comic book aficionado. But the marketing is doing a good job of positioning it as the big, noisy, SFX-rich mindless summer film, and I don't think it will have much competition in the action or sci-fi niche, so chances are it will have a tremendous opening weekend. It already looks like Star Trek reimagined as a testosterony Tom Cruise-ish foray into space, without too much of the pesky thinking and pontificating that tends to turn off the so-called mass audience.

I find that kind of weird, personally. So recasting suddenly makes Star Trek good?

Well I do know a few people who were very casual fans of TOS, but stopped watching (or caring) around Khan. THere opinion was that they didn't believe those actors would be in those situations. Something I has a fan also had problems with (especially 5-7). I am curious what those people think about it now.

uhh how do you get that about the new trek movie when they were talking about wolverine not getting buzz.
something i have also noted.

i have seen people look up when they are out and see the trek trailers being played.
and heard comments from it looks really good to people discussing going to it.

among my circle of friends even though we saw the earlier xmen films there isnt excitment about the wolverine film.
but they not i already bought up that trek seems to the group film of the summer.

Talk's one thing. It's cheap. Money, on the other hand, rolling the dice, laying it on the line--is the ultimate expression of self-confidence. Translation: Metaphor for conjecture versus historical truth. Reality versus wishful thinking. An all too common practice around here.

Wolverine's being sold on Jackman's star power alone. It doesn't need a lot of hyperkinetic marketing to sell it no more than did the previous X Men films.

As for Trek, I hope you have a lot of friends. A whole lot....

i agree with several of the people that the last xmen movie really could hurt it.
it left a very bad taste in peoples mouths.
