Star Trek Wrath of Khan backlash?

I think that after taking artistic risks and with a beautiful artistic design aesthetically in TMP and attempting to push ST beyond what it had been, the subsequent scaling back of things in TWOK feels sort of cheap. Also, the Moby Dick homages feel kind of badly written. I prefer III, and especially IV, over TWOK. III for me and IV are the only movies that recapture the feeling of a TOS episode. Also, Shatner's TJ Hooker perm kinda ruins films II - V for me.

It's funny to read the "Making of Star Trek II" book by Allan Asherman. There are passages about fan backlash at Spock being killed. Passages about death threats to Nick Meyer and other film makers. Passages covering how the fanbase was critical and even hateful of an outsider coming in and trying to put their stamp on "MY STAR TREK."

It's nice to know things were exactly the same 24 years ago with a classic Trek movie as they are today.

Really interesting @Vger23 I read 'Captain's Log: The Making of Star Trek V as told by William Shatner' for the Podcast as research for our final frontier episode (will be reading out some choice segments) The book's cover was a very similar design so maybe there was a full series of this kind of tie-in.

I own the Trek V book...absolutely fascinating read.

I think, in this format, pocketbook released books for TMP, TWOK and TFF

@Vger23 I bought it for a penny on amazon, what a steal! There's some great quotes from Shatner and insight into the film along the way, think it made me view Final Frontier in a whole different way upon my rewatch for the Pod

You should read the novelization of Star Trek V. Makes you wonder what happened when making it.

I think we may surprise people with our thoughts on the Final Frontier when the episode drops on the 12th Jan, let's just say its a revaluation.

@BillJ that's interesting, it sometimes seems that the fans are even harder on the movies they don't care for than the general public but maybe I'm wrong, or maybe its simply every movie has its fans amongst the community and those voices defend them passionately. I know that Greg Lock (Director of trek fan film, 'Ambush'), our Guest on the Final Frontier episode came in ready to launch a defense for Final frontier because its actually his favourite trek movie.

They say that you are a true, serious, hardcore fan of a band when you come to the opinions that their most popular album is actually their worst and that their second-least-popular album is actually their best.

There was a time when ST V was my favorite film. I don't think it's a great film by any means, but it's kind of entertaining. So, I look forward you your thoughts :)

@Vger23 @fireproof78 @BillJ as promised Sirs, here's a link to our new episode taking on 'The Final Frontier' :) pretty proud of this one, I hope that maybe it helps people find a new appreciation for what I believe to be an unfairly maligned. After our conversation on another thread @PCz911 you may like to hear this as well, our drinking habits are much improved for this episode.

I love the intro to this one. I, unfortunately, am listening to it in sections as time allows, but I had to comment on the fireside intro :)
