Star Trek Wrath of Khan backlash?

WOW, what a fantastic response guys, thank you all!

Eye opening stuff, and tbh I'm surprised that TWOK doesn't seem to be as sacred round here as I presumed it would be.

I co-host a Podcast called 'Spocklight', assessing the Trek films from a non-trekkie perspective so obviously we're not always clued into the general fan view on things, and my co-host, Matt asked in our TWOK episode if there were indeed hipster trekkies who didn't rate it and both my other co-host, Paul and I, were pretty sure this wasn't the case but from the evidence here I can see we weren't quite right.

Would any of you mind if I used some quotes from your responses here in a future episode of the pod as a follow up?

Fill your boots.

I guess I must be a "hipster" because I have always felt TWOK was a little over-rated. It's a good enough film, but I find some of the adulation from fans (and ignoring of its problems while gleefully revelling in other films' issues) frustrating.
It's probably my sixth or seventh favourite Trek film (out of 13).

That's a great podcast. I love the concept and look forward to adding it to my library.

Also, feel free to use any quotes from me, if you find mine helpful. You might also be able to find news articles about reviews on responses to the film.

I tend to share this opinion regarding the large amounts of praise towards this film. Though I'm impressed by the production values, the long shadow it casts annoys me.

I would be curious to hear your ratings as well.:techman:

thanks for the compliment @fireproof78 and please rate, review and subscribe if you should be so inclined :).

All of the replies on here have been very helpful indeed and we'll discuss them in our Undiscovered Country episode for sure as they'll be some nice connective tissue with the return of Meyer especially with many here seeming to prefer that entry.

Preferring one Trek film over another is an interesting question for me, because a lot of it depends on my mood. Like anyone else I have "my ranking", which, for the curious goes: TUC, TWoK, TMP, Beyond, STID, TVH, GEN, FC, TSFS, ST09, FF, INS, NEM. But a lot of it depends on my mood. Star Trek stories are so varied that there's really something for everyone. If you're into epic space adventures with literary references: TWoK, or FC. If you're into political intrigue: TUC. If you're into space operas, emphasis on the word "opera": TMP. Zombie movies: FC. Moral questions of modern warfare: STID. The ramifications of warfare: Beyond. You get the idea.

So the movie I pull off the shelf kinda depends on what I'm feeling that day. It's one reason why Star Trek never gets old for me.

Always interested in a good list or ranking, we'll be doing our own ranking once we've worked our way through the films, we each give a rating at the end of each episode for each film as we go so will be combining the scores and seeing who comes out on top.

I think you nailed it, Commander Balok. In fact, you can expand this to the entire franchise. It's part of why Trek is sô awesome.

I have to agree @Balok's Eggnog To be honest, its one of the main reasons that we chose the 'Star trek' film franchise to concentrate on for our podcast, Spocklight, we wanted to do a film franchise episode by episode that was long enough to sustain a pod but also had enough variation in style and ups and downs in quality so it wouldn't become too samey, Trek was perfect for that because almost every film seems so completely individual on those terms, even the ones that connect in plot are very different types of movie. It's making for a fascinating journey so far.

For me, deciding what to watch does depend on my mood, but when it comes to "ranking", or even grouping into "good, middling, bad", I find as the years go past I change my opinions. Currently my list is probably something like

Voyage Home, Beyond, Trek11, Insurrection, Generations, TUC, First Contact, TWOK, TSFS, Final Frontier, TMP, Into Darkness, Nemesis

15 years ago I think my list was more like

First Contact, Voyage Home, TWOK, TUC, Generations, TSFS, Insurrection, TMP, Nemesis, Final Frontier

With First Contact, Wrath, and TUC dropping significantly, and Insurrection especially jumping up. At the current stage of my life I would argue that WOK is certainly overrated, but ask my 10 years ago, or it 10 years time, and I suspect my view would be different.

That's really interesting. One thing I noticed is your relatively high ranking of GEN. Glad I'm not the only one!

My ranking also changes over time too. When I was younger,TWOK was number one, period, no contest. First Contact would've been second. Even now I have a hard time placing TVH, FC, GEN, and STID. They all fall under the "very good" realm for me. TUC, TWOK, TMP,and Beyond being the "best of the best." ST09 and TSFS would be "decent." FF, guilty pleasure, but not good. And INS and NEM, the bad ones. So my ranking moves around within those quality parameters sometimes, but they tend not to jump from one category to the other.

I mentioned above how my appreciation of Wrath of Khan has gone up. By contrast, my appreciation for Search for Spock went down. A few months ago, I stumbled across an old ranking of Trek films I'd made about a decade ago, and I was shocked to see how high I'd ranked Search for Spock. But here's the thing, I went to see Wrath of Khan when it was released in the theaters for a day (a shorter while ago then when I stumbled across that decade-old list), and since that time, I've been slowly making my way through all the movies again, a couple of which, I had not watched in years. And watching Search for Spock again, I was surprised how much I enjoyed it and how the faults I believe it has really didn't bother me or stand out this time round. So I agree with what others have said in this thread; that there's much to be said for the idea that personal rankings change over time, as well as the idea that it all comes down to mood.

I've always ranked TWOK and TMP pretty much tied for the best.

But every now and again I revisit what a joy TVH is.

Yeah me too, watching them back to back is a very enjoyable experience. I think TWOK takes it by a nose though due to it's sheer entertainment value, but TMP is very dear to my heart also. Such a grand, epic, special, but flawed film. As another earlier poster wrote I could rather watch one over the other depending on mood. TMP is a 'sit back and relax on the sofa' kind of film, whereas TWOK is much more exciting.
