Star Trek Will Be Removed From Amazon Prime... Netflix Next?

I find it difficult to believe this will actually be a thing for any extended period of time. It would be an utterly stupid move both financially and in PR terms.

The same was said about other programming that moved to an exclusive streaming service. Turned out to be a fantastic move and those who invested in the other service got god value for money.

Streaming Good:
I watched a couple of Voyager episodes on Netflix last night- they were enjoyable but not good enough to shell out for a season set to watch again.

Streaming Bad:
I do not like being a the whim and mercy of content providers. I also have a crappy DSL connection which ATT starts to pile on the charges once I exceed 150 GB each month. I hate them but it is still the cheapest alternative where I live (rural farm country)

I am not going to enroll in the CBS All Access thing. I do not like how they have it set up and times are tight- I am not about to spend $10 a month just to watch a show. People keep comparing it to the cost of a visit to Starbucks or McDonalds- I don't go to them either.

I did some calculation on typical UK TV spending

If you go for the all you can eat TV, you're spending £1198.50 ($1700) a year, 76% of which goes to Sky, 12% to BT, 12% to BBC. That's $140 a month. For TV. 80% of which has adverts. Ouch.
If you go for basic Sky, you're spending £385.50 ($550) a year, 62% goes to sky.
If you don't have sky, you're spending £145.50 ($200) a year, or $17 a month for your basic 6 BBC channels and about 10 commercial channels (those are funded via adverts)

However the adverts are where it costs you. Advertisers only pay for adverts because they get more than that value. I.e. the average american household funds TV to the tune of $671 a year, or $55 a month, before any subscription costs. This money is recouped from the american public by the companies that are advertising, it's not optional for the population at large. If you don't buy any goods advertised on TV, then that just means someone else is paying your $671.

I probably would have bought TNG and FS9 sets a long time ago if they weren't a ridiculous price when they came out. Around $90 IIRC. Don't know current cost.

My feeling is only buy the permanent copy if it's something you really love. Streaming for sampling, physical copy if it's indispensable. But cost to get all seasons of all great TV shows I don't already own is much higher than cost of Netflix.

The one positive thing about things moved to steaming exclusives is that it encourages quality original content.

I believe that Netflix signed a 4-year extension with CBS in 2013, so I would imagine that Trek is safe there until late next year.

I don't have Amazon Prime. I bought some of the episodes, does that mean I won't be able to watch what I bought after they take them off?

I first got Netflix about 9 years ago. And along with streaming I always used the DVD by mail scheme to get a new movie for each weekend. I saw alot of great old movies, classics, art stuff, and obscure movie along with foreign films. I dropped that feature when they doubled the monthly fee. Most of the movies I ordered are not available on their streaming service. And since I got U=Verse cable I mostly don't use Netflix anymore. In the last couple of months I've probably seen a handful of Trek episodes and maybe one movie.
I think it's about time to end my association with Netflix.

There is a 50th anniversary edition of the DVDS and I think I shall treat myself to a Trekkie treasure of that set

I can still watch Star Trek on Amazon Prime. No expiration date is apparent. I assume CBS renewed Amazon's contract.

Only Trek we get on Netflix in the UK are the first 3 TNG movies and STID. I believe ST09 was on there until recently.

Yeah. TNG was on Netflix UK for a short while but is now long gone. But then the UK catalogue sucks compared with the US one. You'd better like Netflix Originals and movie sequels if you have UK Netflix!

Nah, it just hasn't been 25 days yet. It says 14 days left now. Proof.
Yes, I see that now. I saw no expiration until I put it on my watchlist and viewed the entry there. I'll bet we won't see real comment from CBS or Amazon until it actually goes away and normal people (not us) notice.

I dunno, somebody must be making a pretty penny when I pay $25 for a single new blu ray movie that cost two bucks to manufacture.

Kor
Everyone gets to make a profit, but when you consider infrastructure, freight and filming costs, the total cost is a lot more than $2.

SG1 has been removed from Netflix uk this month, which was annoying m. I had to stand up, turn round, pull the did down from the shelf, and put it in the player. Far more effort than watching it on Netflix

However the killer problem with the did I night for $5 an episode? It forces me to sit through 2 adverts and a film accusing me of piracy when i put the disk in!

I cannot abide adverts, it's why I stopped buying futurama DVDs, and im putting up with them for 3 more episodes of high castle on Amazon prime before cancelling the subscription (trial month).
