Captain Proton was charactirized by Tom Paris so, he was "real", well as real as a fictionnal character can be!
And nah, I wasn't particularly fond of Captain Proton and I prefer TP wearing a Starfleet uniform that in a 50's spacesuit.

Indeed, Scorpion was a really good 2-part episode and a perfect introduction for Seven of Nine!
(I still cringe when I remember how Chakotay's open hostility towards Seven and after 3 years, he is seized with a sudden passion for this same Seven => je t'aime moi non plus (Serge Gainsbourg) / je t'aime à mourir (Francis Cabrel) !

That other clown (or whatever he is supposed be) that is behind him is pulling the Doctor towards himself and away from the guy that is being beheaded. So it is that person's arm.
