In Star Trek VI, when Kirk is jailed he tell McCoy they must escape, not for their sake but the galaxy's sake. "You and I are nothing," he says. He seems to be saying he's worked out there's a conspiracy to do something to disrupt the peace conference. He has two pieces of evidence for this:
The only piece of information Kirk has is that some inmate told him "someone up there" wants him dead. Even if Kirk got proof off-screen that someone was trying to kill him, it wouldn't prove anything. Given Kirk's high profile role in interstellar events, it's not surprising that someone connected to a Klingon prison wants him dead.
All of this is before the public mind rape scene in which Valeris reveals actual facts about the conspiracy, i.e. names of high-ranking conspirators and the fact that the new Bird of Prey exists and that they only have one of them. The mind rape wasn't immediately useful, anyway, because they already suspected a conspiracy and a ship that could fire while cloaked.
So what's Kirk talking about? Does Kirk actually know something more about the conspiracy? Is he just trying to be a hero and say he doesn't care about saving himself but rather saving the galaxy? Does he just think his abilities are so freaking amazing that the galaxy needs him b/c no one else is going to see the need to protect Khitomer?
- During sentencing the judge mentioned "the upcoming peace conference".
- A fellow inmate said there are rumors that there's a reward for killing Kirk and McCoy.
