Star Trek VI.....not that good

Personally, I still think TUC is easily the best Trek movie (including XI). In my view it's actually got a story worth mentioning, presents truly groundbreaking events in the Star Trek universe and really pays tribute to the characters and their history.

It sets the stage for what is to come with the explosion of Praxis in the beginning and never lets up after that. It manages to retain the sense of adventure that IMHO made the TOS movies stand above the TNG ones while coupling it with political drama and a criminal investigation. The sci-fi angle is also put to great use with the cloaked Bird of Prey.

On top of that, I think it has the greatest score of all the films. It manages to convey the sense of urgency and the epic scale of events perfectly.

Finally, it manages not only to be a great Trek film but also succeeds as an excellent send-off.

Without a doubt I would say it has its flaws. But IMHO they're pretty small, all things considered (such as the fact that Valeriis feels the need to demonstrate the phaser-triggered alert to Chekov or the pots and pans). And every Trek movie has at least some flaws, though they're usually far more substantial than what we have hear, in my view, anyway.

So, with reference to the thread title I have to say: Star Trek VI...THAT good! :D

I think it all goes to show: if one likes something, one will be more willing to forgive its flaws. If one isn't, one won't be so forgiving, and indeed will nitpick it as a criticism of it.

It's true. I know, in my heart of hearts, that I'm far too easy on ST11. But it's just so entertaining!:(

Oh, and I overlooked a possibility in regards to Romulan battlecruisers--the Klingons could have just handed some fully operational models over, like that Russian CV they sold/are selling to the Indians.:klingon:

I don't feel like I can add much more to the conversation beyond what's already been said, but I've always liked TUC. Is it perfect? Hell no, it has some glaring flaws, but I appreciate the intent behind the film, and I think it was executed admirably. I could detect no such noble intentions behind Nemesis, to give an example of a truly bad Trek film. Oh, and I for one love the score. True, it was very different, more sinister than your typical Trek score, but that was part of what I liked about it.

At the very least, TUC holds a special place in my heart for being the first Trek film I saw in theatres. I was eight years old, on a trip with my family, and my dad, grandfather, and I decided to go see the new Star Trek movie during a night out. Ah, memories...

You and me both, pal. (This from the guy who likes TFF.)

Quite right! I hadn't thought of the INS Vikramaditya as a real-world precedent, and the Romulans might still have to update the D7s like the Indians are converting the CV. (Interesting photo of it on the Wiki page here btw.)

The Klingons do seem like the types to have a plenty of rustbuckets sitting by the quay that they would be willing to sell off for access to some enhanced cloaking devices, and it would still sit nicely with the idea of them not giving them the most up-to-date tech...

Well said, Daneel. :)

The score definitely bears mentioning; it's really quite beautiful and bombastic. I'd long thought if the long-rumored Excelsior series ever came to be, the ending overture would have made a good theme, appropriately edited.

And what a nice story. The first Trek movie I ever saw in the theater, sadly, was "Generations." (Four times. :shifty:)
