The Tubi TV app is a free streaming service that has a variety of movies and TV shows. I noticed amongst their selection they currently have Star Trek V: The Final Frontier and Star Trek VIIII: Insurrection. Since it is a gloriously rainy day here in beautiful California I've decided to give Star Trek V a re-watch. Something I don't believe I've done in 10 to 15 (maybe even 20) years.

Btw, Star Trek: Nemesis is on CBS All-Access, I think.

FYI, Tubi is apparently advertiser supported. 11 minutes and a commercial break. Roughly 1 minute long. Second break around 32 minutes in making second segment roughly 18 mins..

38:55 in and ... OH MY GOD, MY EYES. MY EYES! … The commander Uhura fan dance. :barf:

Okay, finished. Can't say my opinion of it has changed overall. It did refresh my memory as to how good some scenes were though. The story was weak and the overwhelming majority of outer space based effects sequences were absolutely terrible. Anyone who says otherwise is being disingenuous just for the sake of being a contrarian. Even on my phone they looked atrocious! I've always said this film was one re-write away from being good. I still believe that, however, not a quick over the weekend rewrite but a complete major overhaul as the story was that unsound.

You know, when a lot of the little points don't make sense or sound reasonable then that should be a warning to you that your screenplay isn't working. I know why they didn't but still. No starships with experienced Captains near Nimbus III? GAWD, the hokey cheesiness. Outside of the Kelvin Universe, a starship captain by definition is experienced. Again, if you can't rationalize something soundly then it needs to be rethought and rewrote.

The saving grace of this film is and always was the chemistry (especially now that so many are gone). I teared up more than once during this viewing just seeing the original Kirk, Spock and McCoy bantering on screen. Lawrence Luckinbill was fantastic. I may have appreciated him more this time out as the weight on his shoulders was not plainly apparent and that is a sign of his skill.

Still the worst of the TOS films but better than TNG's Insurrection and Nemesis. I would also rate it better than Abrams Star Trek Journey Into Darkness and Star Trek Beyond.
