Star Trek V/Alien 3 Score

Was it just my imagination or did the Final Frontier and Alien 3 use the same music score? I was watching Alien 3 one night and I thought parts of it sounded very familiar.

There ARE minor similarities between some of the alternate TMP tracks and the ALIEN score, but that's understandable as it's the same composer during the same time period.

...On the other hand, both ST2 and Aliens were done by James Horner, who is infamous for extensively recycling his own material. The bits with Ripley in the atmospheric converter thingamabob, rescuing Newt and roasting the Queen, are quoted almost verbatim from The Wrath of Khan.

Perhaps that's the pairing you are thinking of? Alien3 was the work of one Elliot Goldenthal, and had fewer identifiable themes than Horner's scores.

Yeah, he is very notorious for that. There is a chunk of music from the climactic chase scene in Cocoon that is note-for-note straight from the Enterprise's Genesis escape in The Wrath of Khan. Still, I love a lot of his early work.

Horner is an awesome composer, but he does love to cut and paste that four note "evil" theme. I think it first appeard in Battle Beyond The Stars, but it was most noticeable as Kahn's theme in Trek, Bavmorda's theme in Willow and the rogue wave theme in The Perfect Storm.

...And then he can pull major box office and list hits like Titanic or Zorro, which aren't derivative in the least. Go figure.

It's not a problem if one doesn't see more than one of those films where the "standard Horner score" is used. And to be sure, I never noticed it in Aliens originally, as there was more to do at that point of the film than sit back and listen to the score... And even a scifi fan who digs Trek and Alien might not run into Battle Beyond the Stars or Bicentennial Man or the other photocopy scores.

Having said that, Leonard Rosenman's score for The Voyage Home doesn't work in Robocop II at all...

I always thought that as well. It worked a little better for Star Trek IV, but overall I find his style a little too Christmasy.

Battle beyond the Stars is a great film. And you know what, I don't mind when composers recycle music. Especially if its a good piece of music.

Oh I agree totally. I love BBTS for the music alone; it is one of my favorite scores. The movie is a bit corny, but it is pure fun, and I have to admit that despite the late 70's pajama influence, I love the overall production design on the film.

I don't mind recycled music either, when it is in the derivative sense. But I have to say, note for note arrangements from one movie plopped into the middle of another film's score can rip you right out of the moment if you are well familiar with the original piece.

That's funny. I remember thinking the same thing the first time I heard the opening for STIV:TVH in the theatre. Christmas bells a ringing!

Yeah, I was speaking generally. Horners scores from the early 80's are pretty similar but not identical. Aliens is very similar to TWOK. Oh, and i've not seen BBTS for years - used to have it on video but I don't know what happened to it. Very difficult to get on DVD too...I'm currently aquiring it by....erm, other means.

I when I say "other means" I don't mean I'm downloading it mods. Certainly not via torrent. And when I say I'm not, I actually mean I am.

Maybe.

:p

Warning for confusing me. Comments to PM.

And by "warning," I mean a $15 off coupon to "Aolysius' Legendary Beaver Palace" in Philadelphia (e-mail The God Thing for hours and location).

Whenever a new ST movie composer is announced, it's great to be able to hunt up their older scores and give yourself a possible preview of the music while waiting for the films to come out. I know I did this with ST III, ST IV (I already owned the magnificent animated "Lord of the Rings" soundtrack by Rosenman), ST V - and I went off and dug up Holst's "The Planets Suite" to prepare for ST VI.

At the moment, "The Incredibles", "M:I 3", "Lost" and "Lost Season 2" are never far from my CD player.

"The Incredibles" track is pretty cool. I love tracks when you can actually picture the movie when you're listening.
