Star Trek tops Tarantino's list of '09 films

He had a great anecdote about watching Star Trek on Craig Ferguson, I think. He said in preparation for Cannes and the Festival circuit he wanted to see as many of his friends and competitors films as possible. So after sitting through and researching as many obscure, exotic, harrowing, pretentiosous, thematically miuddled, esoteric, art films as he could, he went and saw STXI and was blown away within the first five minutes. After sitting through all of that other stuff, he had forgotten what wqas like to see a flat-out good, crowd pleasing flick.

No big suprise there. he's made some trek references in his films, and Star Trek II has been mentioned as one of his favorite films, he owns a print of it.

I haven't seen Observe and Report, but I have heard good things. That it is a surprisingly dark comedy that gets very serious, almost Taxi-esque in its third act.

I dunno, I would have put Inglorious Basterds before Star Trek.

...;)

You're asking for it Mr...

Inglorious Basterds was a guys flick and although I liked it being just for guys sort of nullifies it from being better than Star Trek, besides I prefer Star Trek to Inglorious Basterds.

:vulcan:

I don't see how Star Trek is less of a guy's film (the bromance of Kirk and Spock is a major plot point), and even if so, Inglorious Basterds is just a great piece of cinema that's also a damn rollicking good time at the movies.

And who said my preference had to be predicated on gender neutrality?... well, I didn't, anyway. I'm a guy. I like guy things, like explosions, war and killing. Not so much sports, though.

besides I prefer Star Trek to Inglorious Basterds.
Heck, that's fair.

I went to see Basterds with a group that included three girls. They liked it just as much as anyone else did.

Plus with two female characters infinitely stronger than any female character in Trek, I wouldn't call Basterds a guys flick.

IB was an OK film as films go but, as a Tarantino film, it was imo, strike two. Strike one was Death Proof. I am beginning to think the Glory Days of Tarantino are past.

Does placing Observe and Report on there nullify that entire list?

WORST Seth Rogen film to date.

And that says a lot for the guy who'll apparently act in ANYTHING so long as a free buffet table and baggy sweatshirt are involved.

So it's on his list of top 09 films. I guess all I need to do is make a movie entirely about unlikable a**holes and I'll be set on his list.

To be fair though, you have an awfully wide definition of the term "a**hole" :)

I wish he would have said something like this in the clip. It's nice to know what his favourite movies are, but I'd like to know why. I felt the same way when he listed his favourite movies that have come out since he started making movies. It was interesting to know, but the lack of an explanation for every movie (he did explain why he picked a few of them) was disappointing. Especially for some of the more obscure or questionable choices.

One thing I like about Tarantino, both when he picks movies he likes and when he makes movies, is that he is unashamed of movies that are just fun.

He was a big champion of Iron Monkey, which is an excellent movie.

I'm also glad people like Tarantino have been involved in Cannes recently. Awards shows are too often snobbish, ignoring things like sci-fi and martial arts movies.

Tarantino was an early fan and booster of Kevin Smith's View Askewniverse films. I listen to Quentin's opinions more than I do most other directors' when it comes to which films are good and which aren't....though anyone who puts a Seth Rogen comedy on his or her list must be toking some serious ganja on weekends and taking all the next week to come down from the high.
