Star Trek: TMP Versions

Hello.
I am a bit confused about TMP different versions. As far as i know there are 3 of them:
-Theatrical version 1979
-ABC Special Longer Version 1983
-Director´s Cut 2001
of which only theatrical is avaliable in BR, while DC was released in DVD and SLV is only avaliable in Laserdisc and some fan restorations. My question is, which difference is between DC and SLV besides the new VFX? I mean, DC added scenes are also in SLV? Are there any VFX shoots only from SLV, not present in any other version?

Thx u :) That three versions all seem great. I personally like the theatrical without CGI and with the original opening and Vulcan scene. But also i like some of the added scenes in DC, i mean, the new dialogues and some corrections. Is good to have 3 versions but SLV should be released oficially. I hope they will do when they release the restored other two versions.

Yeah, there really isn't a version I like the best. I think some of the small scenes added into the DC/SLV give the movie more emotional impact; however, I don't like most of the DC's Lucasesque CGI changes and hate how they butchered the sound effects.

Yes, TMP has a DE, while TWOK has both a DE on DVD, and a DC on blu-ray (which excludes a scene that was in the DE). Confused yet?

Yeah. If we get DE in BR i will make a Fan edit combining Theatrical Version with the no-CGI/ Sounds changes from DE and maybe some SLV scenes if It is Also released in BR.

A scene or just a line of dialogue?
Is just that line where Kirk tells Spock about that young boy (David) being his son and then Spock replies "Fascinating". I always liked that one It that particular moment It creates a TOS feeling to it. In fact i did a Fan edit of BLU Ray DC with that dialogue re-included.

I like most of the scene trims but not the missing dialogue in the DE. I don't mind the new effects.

It was fairly easy to stitch most of the missing scenes back in as a personal fan edit but the soundtrack on some of the scenes like McCoy in Kirk's quarters, and Sulu and Ilia on the bridge, are a bit dodgy compared to the scenes either side. I managed to add the red alert claxon back in ok too.

Director's Edition = DE

That's the name, not DC for Director's Cut :)
What's funny is I wasn't sure that "SLP" was correct so looked it up. Oops.

I don't mind the new effects.

My issue is changing Vulcan and San Francisco, those were both retcons to make things look like Berman-era Trek, it wasn't really being true to TMP's original vision. The few shots of the ship and actually showing V'ger at the end I didnt mind.

I like some of the Vulcan stuff, although I could live without it. I prefer the updated special effects for V'Ger's weapons, the approach to Earth and the crew exit from the Enterprise. I do admire that they kept the changes fairly tight and specific.

When I saw the theatrical cut, the main thing I noticed was how the scene with Voyager VI really dragged. Lots of long pauses that just featured flashing lights. The DE vastly improves the pacing of this scene.

Was it really "TMP's original vision" that Vulcan should appear to have no atmosphere?

TOS Earth had no atmosphere. ;)

I know we're jesting a bit, but don't a bunch of TOS planets show cloud cover? (Granted, many of them by being re-used, but still counts.) Maybe it was just an exceptionally clear day on Miri's planet in the above example. (Which then got clouds added for Tomorrow is Yesterday IIRC.)

And videocassette, of course. In the US, the theatrical on video was originally priced for rental stores, making it expensive for the general public to buy. Then the SLV got a much cheaper release and it replaced the catalog version, even sharing the same order code.

It's not "SLP", it's SLV. Special Longer Version.

That is not the reason for the changes.

^^^The reasons for changing San Francisco were because the DE guys talked Wise into it: ignoring what Roddenberry wanted and (barely) got in the theatrical cut, and which you can see better in this dropped (Matt Yuricich) shot which showed the city as GR wanted it: smaller and lower and a lot of it underground and most of the land restored to nature, with the only recognizable 20th century structures remaining being the Golden Gate Bridge, the Transamerica Pyramid and Coit Tower.

Excuse the horrible image quality. I haver better images of this shot but they crop off the bottom of the frame and lose the water and foreground rocks.
