According to the article in the Star Trek Magazine magazine (Dec 2001) Robert McCall worked on conceptual painting for the images spock would see in his spacewalk, those paintings were then used as a basis for the models that were then built by Greg Jein. The original article states that at one stage Doug Trumbull wanted to use those painting in the film but that the end result was not satisfactory hence the building of the models. However, in all of the DVD Commentary tracks for both Star Trek the Motion Picture and the Directors Edition, Doug Trumbull and Daren R Docterman indicate that some of those concept drawings were elaborated on by McCall and actually used. Does anyone know which is correct?
