Paramount and Paramount+ are excited to announce that a full restoration of the Director’s Edition of Star Trek: The Motion Picture has been greenlit.

The restoration will be undertaken by producer David C. Fein, restoration supervisor Mike Matessino, and visual effects supervisor Daren R. Dochterman, all of whom worked previously with director Robert Wise.

The film will be prepared for presentation in 4K Ultra HD with Dolby Vision™ high dynamic range (HDR) and a new Dolby Atmos® soundtrack. The restoration is expected to take 6-8 months and will launch with an exclusive window on Paramount+.

Hyped. I've been waiting so many years for this. I hope the updates to the CGI are good.

I'm tempted to ask in the TMP Appreciation Facebook group (frequented by members of the DE team) if they're going to fix what I've been told is the most glaring error in the new VFX and change the shot of the asteroid exploding in front of the Enterprise so it's cheated slightly to the left of the ship's centerline instead of slightly to the right. As it is, the new shot entirely tramples over the visual language and continuity of the film. :p

(For what it's worth, I think the most glaring error is that in the extra few seconds added to the shot of V'Ger transcending, they didn't continue the camera move, so the Earth is perfectly still until it suddenly begins slowly receding when we reach the original footage, but I don't feel as strongly about it.)

Ok, dumb question. Will they also release the Directors Edition on Blu-Ray? I don't have a 4K player (to be honest, I don't care for 4K, many times when I see a 4K picture it makes the movie look like a daytime soap opera--sometimes it can be too perfect).

I've held off buying TMP on Blu-Ray in the hopes the DE will be released in Blu-Ray format. TMP is my favorite Trek film and I loved the DE. So I'm hoping the 4K restoration means they'll also release a Blu-Ray copy as well.

Now, if we can just get Paramount to upgrade the effects for Star Trek V I'd be set

TM.com states it will most likely be on blu too

I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for the SLV finally getting some love. It would be cool if they could finish the shot where Kirk leaves the airlock, although I doubt they'd want to spend any budget on that.

I hope we get more of the memory wall deleted footage as part of the extras. IIRC the DVD release just had an empty space suit being flown through one of the sets but since then I've seen a lots of stills of Kirk and Spock actually on the sets, so assuming those weren't publicity shots I'm hoping that means there was quite a lot of that sequence filmed.

I'd like to see the deleted scene with the security guards attacking the probe and being zapped too. I remember that was supposed to be completed and part of the DE but it wasn't in there (I think it created a continuity problem with only Decker and Ilia being listed as missing at the end).

Doesn't appear that the TV cut is being officially redone in any way. Just the theatrical cut in the box set and the DE next year.

I am curious if this is going to be a restoration of the DE as-is or if they're going to take advantage of the last twenty years' of technological advancements to do stuff that was out-of-scope on the prior release with the time and budget available. Mojo mentioned on Facebook that they've made a new 3D model of the Enterprise (which is good, the old one had some inaccuracies with the windows and visible segmentation on the saucer that wouldn't hold up in 4k), but there was also, say, the infamous cockeyed nacelle, which Dochterman later said was a compromise on top of a compromise and that, ideally, they would've rotoscoped out the back wall entirely and replaced it with the officer's lounge under the bridge, which is much more practical with today's tools than it was in 2000. Nobody but us is going to notice if the Enterprise model is different and the windows on the aft-port side of the saucer have been fixed, or if they're using linear workflow and PBR rendering, changes like that I'll take as a given, but obvious stuff even the more casual viewers could see like a new set extension are different, that's an open question.

I mean, if I had infinite budget and infinite access, I'd do a lot more clean-up on the '70s VFX (holes in ships during the drydock sequence), recomposite the lightning-probe scene (with or without adding back in the security guard) so the left and right sides of the screen match up, other things. I have a list somewhere, I started work on a fan edit that was mostly an upscale of the DE with a few extra tweaks and fixes here and there, though I haven't touched it in a long time. I did get as far as laying out all the theatrical edition BR footage against the DE edit, and going over the film scene-by-scene like that really lets you see every possible place it could be cleaned up.

I’d imagine it would be pretty simple to do seamless branching with the theatrical cut once all of the footage has been restored. I’m sure they’re going to work with everything they’re able to find, which should hopefully include the TV cut footage.

Has the SLV ever been released in widescreen? I wonder if the 12 minutes (or however long) of additional footage still exists somewhere in the wide aspect ratio.

The closest equivalent project that comes to mind for me is the Superman: The Movie extended cut from a few years ago. They were able to do a hi-def widescreen version that was essentially the same as the long TV version, using a hodgepodge of film reels that were discovered in Warner's archives. But a decent amount of correction/restoration was required to make the end product have some visual consistency, and it's still not perfect.
