News Star Trek: The Motion Picture Director's Cut is being restored in 4K, launching first on Paramount+

I can respect that. I never did support VOY on DVD. If it ever got a BD release I can't say whether I would cave.

Watched the Director's Edition a few weeks back and after paying attention to certain audio changes like the alteration of 82 AUs to 2 AUs, I wondered if there was anywhere else in the film that might benefit from some slight alterations.

One scene that stood out was Uhura contacting Captain Kirk in the Officer's Lounge. In the Director's Edition, they used the take of Kirk answering Uhura's call on his wrist communicator where as in the theatrical version, he simply walks out of the room. What stood out for me in this scene was Uhura specifying that she was contacting the 'Officer's Lounge' through it's PA system. I thought "If they're going to use the take of Kirk using his wrist communicator to respond to Uhura, why have it play out like it's still coming through the room's PA system?"

So that was my goal with this edit. To make Uhura's call to Kirk sound like it was coming from his wrist communicator instead of the room'a PA system. Here are the changes:

  1. Added an 'incoming call' chirp when we cut to Kirk just before he lifts up his communicator. I know they made a unique chirp for the communicator that can be heard later on in the film, but I couldn't use it since it's underneath Jerry Goldsmith's score.
  2. Reduced the volume of her call.
  3. Removed "Officer's Lounge" from her dialogue.
I've included both cuts for comparison's sake.

I did a few tweaks for my fan edit. The one that annoyed me most was the gap between why it's Mister.................... Spock!

Hmm.... Interesting changes made to this shot.

Truth be told, I'm going to miss the barely lit Enterprise going through that dark inner chamber though. The one thing I recall from the behind the scenes interviews regarding the Enterprise was that they wanted the Enterprise to illuminate itself instead of having dozens of unseen light sources light up the whole model. I don't see how the new light sources in this newly lit chamber could light the Enterprise this way.

Also, are they going to be changing the overall look of the V'Ger island sequence at the end of the film? If you look closely, the V'Ger island is no longer surrounded by total darkness. There is a visible blue haze surrounding it now. I can't really see how that would fade into pitch black by the time the Enterprise comes to a complete stop. You think they're going to try and show some visual element in the background instead of it being just pitch black with a few lightning bolts?

I hope they fix the robotic-looking CGI people walking from the Enterprise saucer toward the V'Ger step-rocks.

In Ilia's defence...

If I want to upgrade my fan edit using the new print, does anyone know what aspect ratio I need? I'm currently on HD. I wonder how much lighting adjustment I might need too....?

I have asked before but I don't think it has been addressed... for the stuff that was added into the Special Longer Version, is that footage still readily available on film somewhere? If so, then it shouldn't be too hard to scan it in at higher resolution. Time and expense could be saved by just scanning it and not bothering to do any retouching/restoration/whatever on that footage.

I'm not going to lie, seeing that footage in 4K (or however much my computer monitor allows me to see of 4K) just made me look really forward to this. That deep, wide, upward-looking angle of the Enterprise entering V'Ger is priceless.
Daren seems to be very proud of that shot. On the La-La Land's record release of TMP that he did the artwork for, that shot is used for the inner artwork when you open the album up.

I have seen cleaned up wide-screen scenes at 720 (cleaned up and enhanced through digital AI I think) but some of them do look a fraction over processed. I could upscale them again in After Effect and maybe soften them with some blurring. I don't know how they will compare...

I don’t think I’ve seen the Directors Cut so this will be new for me when it comes out
I saw the theatrical version for the first time for the anniversary. Up until then i had only seen the SLV and DE. Each version has pros and cons I guess
