Side by Side Comparison: In this video we compare the original Airlock scene and the remastered version of Star Trek The Motion Picture. This scene was originally included in the Special longer Version release of the film, which included about 12 minutes of previously unseen footage, including deleted scenes and alternate takes. This scene was originally part of another deleted scene known as the Memory Wall, when this scene it released the shot was incomplete with the sound stage exposed, however it has now been remastered for the 4K Blu-ray release.

One of these days, I'm going to have to try doing the matte myself with the hatch in the right place. I don't know why the DE team didn't, if it was an accident or there was something about the shape of the saucer in the correct place that made it harder to blend into the live action.

The DE team made an efficient CGI repair to eliminate the soundstage's rafters and complete the matte painting. Their goal was not to renovate the position of the whole airlock. The rafters were hard to miss in the SLV, but the overall goal was the DE in 4K, not repairing the old SLV.

It seems like it'd be the same amount of work no matter which hatch on the CG model was used, just a matter of lining up the virtual camera. That's why I wonder if it was a mistake (and there were several in the '21 DE, like the vignette effect applied to all the new effects sequences) or a deliberate change.

Sorry, no idea what you mean by a "vignette effect".

If you are on the hunt for "mistakes", you will find them in everything. The DE 4K Team had a strict budget and had to work within that.

Google AI just told me: "This effect can be subtle or pronounced and is often used to draw attention to the center of the image and create a sense of depth." Sounds fine to me.

There's a bunch of little errors that crept into the TMPDC4K that aren't budget related though. Almost-finished shots and the like. Little oversights and oddities. At the most generous I'd chalk them up to the schedule rather than the budget but I'm sure one could make the case that those are inextricably linked.

Yeah, it's odd that they moved the hatch from the correct location - it seems like the shape of the saucer wouldn't make that big of a difference since the seem to have digitally replaced all of the foreground saucer exterior panels that were physically present on the set.

Vignetting is a shadow around the edge of a picture or video frame. In and of itself, there's nothing wrong with it, but the '21 DE added it to to the Vulcan and San Francisco establishing shots for no clear reason. The top of the sky should not be black on a clear, sunny day.

Once I spotted the TOS shuttlecraft just stopping in mid-air before the cut from the master shot of the Tram Station, I'll never be able to un-see it. That's just sloppy QA work.
