Star trek!! The guys that aren't that important!

Capt_Pickirk

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
I was looking up on the period in trek history after 'The Earth-Romulan war' and before 'The Cage' (roundabout sometime in 2200s-2210s) and was rather surprised to find that pretty much nothing has been created that is set in that period of time.

I got thinking about what stories could be told and who the main characters would be like. Rather than going with the bravest of the brave and the best in fleet and all that jazz (even though I do like those stories) I thought it would be interesting to show the trek universe from a different perspective, looking at it from the middle-man's point of view.

The kind of people the flag-ship would've casually flown past and not bat an eyelid.

The series would be called Star Trek: Thunder (or some other name that would sound better) and be set on the Transport vessel 1003 nicknamed 'thunder' by the crew of the ship.

Set in the 2211, the series would follow the adventures of the 'thunder' through various different stories, with it's commander, Captain Jacob Ash previously captain of another vessel where all crew-members but him and Dr Christopher Stiles were brutally killed by a crew-member gone insane from Transporter Psychosis in 2209.

They later moved on to another ship, 'Thunder', still scarred by their experience both have a fear of the transporter and refuse to use it, taking shuttle-crafts instead.

The new crew-members they gain are,

Cmdr 'Mr' Thalar, a 'by the book' Andorian First officer and Tactical Officer.

Lt Cmdr Roman Rutkowski, a Polish chief engineer and pretty much the only engineer on the ship (it's a small vessel about the size as the defiant from DS9 but most of the space is for cargo)

Lt. Maria Reed, descendant of Malcolm Reed and Communications officer

Ensign. Edward Pike, dunno what he'll do, I'll think of something

It would be interesting to see this kind of story, I have to admit. However, the networks are more into the flashy, action-packed, super high-tech stuff where every cast member is a buff action hero(ine). Unfortunately, this story is not likely to see TV any time soon.

Sounds a little like the thinking behind Firefly - not focussing on the big ships, the big shots and the history makers, but the people that history left behind.

A couple of my story ideas that I thought I'd share. Bear in mind these are the very bare bones of the stories and not the whole 'shebang'. please critique and add your own ideas:

"Star light, star bright"
A vessel warps through the Banfi Delta system causing huge gravitational disturbances and ripping the two planets in that system apart.
The THUNDER and it's crew are in the area when the huge gravitational disturbance shakes the ship, the crew move the THUNDER to a safe distance and discover that the disturbances were created by a ship warping through the Banfi star-system. Captain Ash orders pursuit of the unidentified craft. Due to the gravitational disturbances they are forced to go round the system at warp three. They head round, then they receive a distress signal from a nearby starbase, the ship is going to head near them before heading through a inhabited star system. The THUNDER heads at warp 7 towards the ship. They manage to catch up to the ship but are unable to place a tractor beam around it (some magnetic thing or something). They realize that it is in fact a weapon from the romulan war, the STARLIGHT, a Nuclear Bomb that was strapped to a warp engine and was programed to warp to Romulus and obliterate the planet. The ship some how got sent of course at the launch and starfleet had assumed it had been destroyed. Captain Ash quickly orders a phaser burst to create a warp core breach, this happens but it also activates the bomb's nuclear device creating a huge explosion crippling the THUNDER. The shock wave pushes the THUNDER backwards at high speed to an unknown destination

"Crippled"
The THUNDER, still crippled (not even thrusters work, the artificial gravity keeps playing up), is heading towards a huge gas giant that, because the shields are no longer active, will crush the vessel. It is a race against the clock to get the ship working again. The Crew try to reroute power through the dilithium crystals, however the crystals have fractured meaning that they have no means of propulsion. They then get the idea of rerouting power through the deflector dish to bring back power to the impulse engines. They do this and it works, just in the nick of time, they fly away at maximum impulse.

"That Sea-Blue Ale"
Whilst having the THUNDER's systems repaired at a starbase, the crew spend some time on the station. The crew of the THUNDER meet a few merchants that have managed to smuggle various objects across the Klingon and romulan borders, such as Klingon Coffee (Raktajino) and a strange blue ale. A few minor officers try the ale and decide to trade it for a few minor possessions. The THUNDER, fully repaired, and restocked with dilithium crystals flies away from starbase to a future location. Slowly, everyone on the ship tries the blue ale and are very quickly intoxicated by it's effects. Members of the crew do various drunken things, whilst sober members of the crew try to get back to starbase. The ship arrives at the starbase but nearly everyone there is drunk too, and the merchants are missing. Mr Thalar, is able to track the merchant's impulse trail from their ship and the THUNDER gives chase. When the merchant ship is within visual range Captain Ash contacts them and demands to know what this blue ale is that they got. The merchants reveal that it is Romulan Ale, a very potent and addictive drink that works on the body very quickly. Mr Thalar and Commander Reed beam the rest of the Romulan Ale into space and destroy it with their phasers then issuing a reprimand upon the merchant ship and basically telling them to piss off.
