Star Trek: The Experience dead?

Has anyone been by Neonopolis lately? Or possibly spoken to, or heard anything at all from, Joshi? It seems like only yesterday the guy was promising a May 2009 opening, and then when that didn't pan out, promising a May 2010 one. Well, the May 2010 date is rapidly approaching (basically, 3 months from now), and if no one has seen or heard anything, maybe the plans did fall through.

If that's what is happening, I wonder how long before Joshi's rights to STTE dissolve or revert back to CBS again?

I think they should bring it back, It should be in a state where its possible for anyone to go there. I think putting it in Las Vegas maybe, made it to hard for travelers to go there often. I could see it in Florida or Texas.

How are any of those places "Easier" to travel to than Las Vegas? It is all relative, short of transporting. Hell, I am in So. Cal. I think it should be next to Disneyland...easy to travel for me.

I was in Vegas in September 09 and went down by Neonopolis. Let's just say its not a booming place. There appeared to be a number of vacant stores and the surrounding area (out of the way of the enclosed Fremont Street Experience) does not look inviting past dark.

The area that ST:E was in is all but dead. If it does come back, it absolutely needs to be somewhere else. Will it come back? I doubt it. Maybe! Maybe if they tie it in with the next JJverse Star Trek flick it has a chance. Maybe.

I wouldn't say permanently but this does mean that nothing of the previous STTE will be coming back. There's probably enough blame to go around but my sights are on this Rohit Joshi character. The guy's got a history of big talk, small delivery. I am glad that they will apparently be letting the previous crew go through the warehouse to pick up their old uniforms, etc. before moving everything to Pasadena.

Definitely the end of an era.

To be honest, old or new stuff, I think STTE is dead for now. About the only way it could be brought back is if it is to be marketed with enough tie-in with the next JJ'verse blockbuster. Or what they hope will be a blockbuster. ST nuvo did great in the theaters... rather briefly... at least compared to some other stuff we've seen lately.

But then again... all the marketing and toys and this and that did simple horrible.

Sorry about jumping to conclusions there, but when I first read the article the note about still moving forward with a new STTE was not there.

It is sad that none of the old experience will continue in the new one, but at least the plans have not been scrapped. I am glad the folks that made the old STTE what it was, are able to glean a few momentos before the auction.

It makes me wonder if STTE-A will even open this year (2010)...if they are starting completely from scratch like this. I agree, Biggs, when it comes to Joshi, I'd like to see "A little less conversation. A little more action..."

I worked as a cast member at the original STTE when it opened at the Hilton in '98, and as a lifetime (at that time) fan of Star Trek, the joy of working at and bringing the world of Trek that much closer for fans as well as newcomers is a wonderful memory. To see the attraction return so my son (now 7 months and already a Trek junkie) may enjoy it would have been a wonderful gift to pass on. Time tells all, and so far the tellin ain't good.

You would think that after all this time someone (Points accusingly at the PtB or whoever had and has the future of Star Trek in thier grubby hands) would wise up and realize what a treasure of American and (god willing we ever meet E.T.?) Human culture they have on their hands and cease destroying what is left?

Pffft....wishful thinking I guess...

According to Trekmovie.com, CBS is still working on a new ST Experience but has determined that most of the assets from the original won't be useful. It seems likely that a new version will focus heavily on the new version of Star Trek represented by the 2009 Abrams movie.

Mayor Oscar Goodman stated this in a news conference on October 16, 2008 that a possible deal was currently being negotiated between CBS and Rohit Joshi, developer of the Neonopolis Mall.
Star Trek : The Experience will re-open in Neonopolis mall in 2010. It was hoped to have a phase open by the premier of the Star Trek film, but those plans were unsuccessful.
January, 2010, no evidence of anything Star Trek opening or under construction in the Neonopolis.

Sadly, altogi, that's all old news. The update at www.trekmovie.com is the latest news.

Ultimately it does make sense to just start over. It looks like it's going to take a while and paying for storage for units that may or may not fit (or have plenty of wear-and-tear) probably didn't make fiscal sense either.

I set up Hallmark shops for a number of years back in the 80s and 90s and we always dreaded setting up stores with used fixtures from another store. Pieces would get lost, the fixtures had dings and ultimately, the new owners would have to pay to have replacement parts shipped to them at added expense. So, in trying to save money, they ended up with a brand-new, dinged-up, miss-matched store. I would not want that for any version of STTE.

Here's hoping we hear a progress report on STTE-A soon.
