Star Trek: The Complete Unofficial History Update

Bob Greenberger

Just wanted to let everyone know that my book,Star Trek: The Complete Unauthorized History: To Boldly Go Where No Fan Has Gone Before, is now available for pre-order at Amazon and fine booksellers everywhere.

In addition to lots of words from me, it contains scads of sidebars from the likes of our own Steve Roby and Howard Weinstein. The book wound up being edited by Scott Pearson while Howie and Paul Simpson made certain my words made some sense.

I am tremendously proud of cramming in 40 years of television, film, and fan history into 72,000 words (give or take) so hope you all consider adding this to your library.

I might have to break my e-books only rule for this one. I have a handful of BTS books for the Trek franchise, but the latest one seems to only cover either the pre-release info or first season of VOY.

I'm a sucker for nonfiction about Star Trek. When I have the money, I'll definitely pick it up.

I won't be preordering until I can find someplace local to do so, but I definitely need this book.

Oh, they do - I actually work there. But this book never came across their preorder stuff that I saw. Believe it or not, that's far from unheard of - they haven't been able to get in any pocket Trek books since right around Destiny.

And yeah, I probably could preorder from B&N - they're nowhere near as bad as amazon and the like, but I much prefer supporting smaller retailers whenever possible.

As I said, the Diamond orderpak no longer carries ST fiction, but I thought "Complete Unofficial History" would be right up their alley. Aren't these types of books in the catalogs about three-four months before publication?

If you actually work in the comic store, the boss should have access to order from all regular suppliers, not just Diamond. Why not contact Voyageur Press (Quayside Publishing Group in Minneapolis), directly?

Voyageur's Facebook page says, "Our goal at Voyageur Press is to be America's regional publisher. Voyageur is best known for our regional books, whether they're regional looks at travel and natural history or sports, music, gardening, and more. Visit http://www.voyageurpress.com/!"

Looks to me like your comic shop could order a supply via Quayside's online catalog. "Qbookshop offers free USPS shipping on orders $50 or more when shipped to a US address"

Then it's even more important to place your pre-order somewhere. It's really the only way to inform smaller retailers that they will have a genuine sale for those non-returnable books they are about to order in this volatile world economy.

Hah - mostly unnecessary discussion, it seems, as the book's not hitting till October. I had it in my head it was going to be much sooner than that. The book won't come across our orders till August, July at the earliest.

And yes, you're correct that Trek nonfiction does still show up through Diamond, but it can be dodgy. I try and stay informed as to when things are hitting, so that my options can stay open in case it doesn't come across our order forms.

Hi all,

I appreciate the interest and support. Just to update you: the book has an October 15 on sale date which means it should be finding its way into bookstores up to two weeks earlier in some regions. Those ordering it online should have it no later than the on sale date. The timing is great because I'll be able to flog it mightily at New York Comic Con which is right about that time.

The book is written and copyedited. Scott Pearson has assembled a swell assortment of images (tricky since it's unlicensed). We've seen a good chunk of early design pages and I've completed the captioning work. Over the next few weeks, I should be seeing the final designs so I can proofread the pages then it goes off to another corner of the world where it will be printed, bound, placed on a slow boat and brought to our shores for everyone's enjoyment.

The book will be a solid read, I think, bolstered by all the sidebars from a wide variety of people who have deep connections with Star Trek.

Bob

Hey, and Only Superhuman's on-sale date is exactly one day later! We'll both have books to plug at NYCC.

Well, color me intrigued. :D

I can only speak re the pics I submitted to Bob and Scott, but the "Ian McLean collection" includes some wild and rare/bizarre pics from Australian Trek conventions, of rare collectibles, of unique customized Trek objects and costumes, etc.

No idea what ones they've chosen for the book, nor how many, but I imagine contributions canvassed from everyone else are also just as wild/rare/bizarre/unique!

I only noticed today that the book is to be a hardcover. I'd originally assumed trade paperback. Can't wait!

Considering preordering, but I might have a way to get an advance review copy, providing they send out any advance review copies.

Either way, it'll be fun going over it and nitpicking.

I was notified yesterday that this book arrived in Australia yesterday! Galaxy Bookshop, Sydney.

Five of my pics made the cut, I understand. Off to check out the book today!
