Star Trek: Starships Model/Magazine Subscription

How good is the Breen ship?
Most of the ships I want have bee hit or miss - the Stargazer was just tragic.
The Breen is one I would rally like to have if it is a decent size and pretty accurate.

You should check out Irish Trekkie's review, and also hop on over to Some Kind of Star Trek for their review.

I haven't got it yet, but from what I've seen, it's turned out to be a pretty decent model (especially compared to the original preview images which made it look far too saturated and colourful, too much like a toy) and people seem quite happy with it.

I'm trying to get a hold of the Breen ship and the Federation Figher now here in the UK (okay, I could have got them back in March, but I wasn't entirely certain...). At the moment, it looks like I can only get the latter from Forbidden Planet and their supplier, not sure if I can get the Breen ship except for when it eventually comes out on the Eaglemoss site (although it almost sounded like the people at Forbidden Planet said they couldn't get that one yet...so I'm hoping I interpreted them correctly and that they haven't had it in due to supply issues, but are due to get it in at some point still).

And, as always, I am torn between whether or not to get any ships off eBay, especially for cheaper than from the Eaglemoss shop (and especially for ships that never seem to be in stock on the UK store). They just don't feel as 'new' to me as ones directly from Eaglemoss, but then some of the ships are rare and I don't expect them to be in stock anytime soon here in the UK (judging by my observations over the past year of the UK Eaglemoss store, anyway - will they ever get the Equinox in, or Defiant magazines that aren't mis-packaged with the Voyager model? Yeah, that last one really did happen to me this year...).

I got the Breen ship on Wednesday and the Fed fighter yesterday (had to wait it payday for that one) from a local comic/collectible store. We get them a bit later than you.

I have 32 ships as of yesterday and I'd say about a third of them were from eBay (Jem'Hadar battle cruiser, Andorian ship, Akira, Hideki, Suurok class, Stargazer, Nebula, Enterprise-D, NX-01, Equinox, Defiant). I'm in Canada, and for a lot of the older ones I don't have but want, it's pretty much the only option for a lot of the older ships I want (I still really want the Fortunate, the Saber class, and the Enterprise-B, C, and E) Kind of expensive, but that's the breaks.

Thanks for the link to the Breen review - great to see this one was executed well.

Hsrd to tell from those pictures, about what size is it?

I saw it on a local Hobby Stores display shelf a few days ago and was impressed. The actual colors in hand are a little less extreme than the preliminary photos. It looks really good. I can't vouch for absolute screen accuracy as its not a ship I ever really committed to memory, but I at a casual glance I think they nailed it.

I was so uncertain back in March about the Breen ship, and against getting the Federation Fighter, that I held off. Now...oops, changed my mind. Fortunately Forbidden Planet looks to have been able to get the Federation Fighter in (well, it read as in stock from their supplier, but whether that list was completely up-to-date I shall find out very soon, I'm picking up the Enterprise A tomorrow and will ask).

I'm usually icky about eBay (ever since I paid over the odds for the Enterprise E), but I'm beginning to think that it might be ideal for some of the ships I'd like but am not as fussed about - could save money on a few of them if I catch those listings. They're still new anyway - the ones from Eaglemoss have only sat in a warehouse for ages anyway, and as to the idea (my idea, rather) that even the new ones are second hand because the people on eBay have bought them to then sell on...well, that's really what places like Forbidden Planet do; they buy from a supplier who has bought from Eaglemoss to then sell on, and their suppliers have bought from Eaglemoss to sell on (specifically to trade businesses such as Forbidden Planet and W H Smith, but to sell on nonetheless). Some of these people on eBay are business sellers who've either cut out the middle-man and have bought directly from Eaglemoss, or who knows, they might have bought from suppliers who have bought from Eaglemoss.

Looks like I'm only getting issue #71, Klingon Transport, this month. Just received my shipping confirmation and it's the only ship listed.

So, I finally did it last Sunday, I decided to stop being so particular and bid on another ship on Ebay - the Jem Ha'dar Battlecruiser (it's rather rare here in the UK). Snapped it up for £5.99 plus £3.95 postage and packaging, unopened and with the magazine (and in the original plastic bag packaging as well...I am particular, aren't I?). I love it! I've never had a model of any of the Dominion ships, so it has that buzz about it for me - and I love the Dominion story arc, especially the battles - and it's absolutely huge, as well, one of the largest models in the collection, right next to the Enterprise D (I didn't expect it to be so big). The auction ended Sunday evening, it was dispatched on the Monday, and I received it Wednesday (I opened it Thursday because I had no time Wednesday for that), so to paraphrase Gul Dukat, on Thursday evening I remarked," I have been waiting five days for this moment."

I also like the Enterprise A that has come out (never picked up the issue #2 refit), and it doesn't look nearly as bad in person as it did in some of the photos online (referring particularly to the bussard ramscoops at the front of the nacelles). I think sometimes photos can over-exaggerate elements of these models, and that happened there for me - the bits of black plastic (actually, they appear to be blue plastic painted black) don't seem as jarring as they look in the photos, they aren't anywhere near as prominent.

Forbidden Planet have also managed to get the Federation Fighter in for me, their supplier still had it in stock. Unfortunately, the same can't be said for the Breen Warship, so either it's the Eaglemoss website or Ebay for that one (I'm a patient guy...).

^^^^
Patience is a virtue with the Eaglemoss shop sometimes. Ordered Grissom, Defiant and Yeager back in February, and so far only one has been delivered. (According to customer support, they were out of stock again.) I suppose it's a good sign that the collection is selling well, and previous delayed orders have always gotten here eventually, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I hope you're right. I likewise ordered a Grissom back then along with an Ent-B. Ent-B is still backordered. I got the Grissom model, but the Magazine Issue was backordered.

Federation Fighter ticked off the list, also now getting the Cardassian Galor and the Jem'Hadar Fighter because I want my Dominion fleet. On the wall about the Hideki, but I do want the Breen Warship and the Hideki would complete the Dominion fleet that has been released (now we only need them to release the Jem'Hadar Battleship and the Karemma ship, and then it really is complete). The Enterprise C is back in stock on Eaglemoss, so considering that too despite its flaws - I do love the design of the Ambassador class.

EDIT: Taken a nice look at my Federation Fighter, I really like it. It has to be said, though - doesn't anyone else think it is reminiscent of the Goa'uld Death Glider and F302 from Stargates SG-1 and Atlantis?

I haven't seen much of Stargate, but I think I know the one you're talking about. Other than the wings being curved down, I don't really see it.

Actually the Hideki looks really nice, I think. The "Designing the Hideki" article in the accompanying mag is a little odd because it's all about how they couldn't find anyone involved with DS9 who remembers designing it. I was a little unsure about the Breen ship, based on the color in some photos I'd see, but up close, it looks great. Really happy with both it and the Fed fighter.

I also hope to get every ship on both sides associated with the Dominion War. Of the ones release, I still have yet to get the Reliant, the Saber (which is also the last of the "First Contact Four" that I don't have), the Romulan Warbird, and the K't'inga. I too hope we'll get the battleship. If you count Cardassian ships as part of the Dominion, then I'd really like the Groumall also.

Still hoping for the Merchantman and Jenolan as well.

Just a little bit around the cockpit and canopy. And really that was because it was an easy shape to recreate for full size set mock ups. It's easier to make flat Plexiglas paneled canopy's for a TV show than it is to create custom bubble shaped ones.

Even in movies- IIRC the bubble canopy on the Scorpion in Nemesis was a reversed F-16 canopy prop they borrowed from the show 'J.A.G.'

There are two reasons why we tended to see squared off canopies in classic SF shows. Star Wars (note in the original it was all framed paneled canopies with very little curves), BSG, Buck Rogers, etc. Pretty much anytime you saw a canopy with a complex curve it was a small, often kitbashed, model. Anything that they needed human actors to interact with got the flat panel with frames treatment.

This was because to light the ships with the actors, and not get weird lighting artifacts, they were shot without glass. The framed cockpits still kept the illusion of the cockpit so they could fill in the glass in post. The complex curved bubble canopies besides being more expensive to make, were trickier to shoot. Where you tend to see them they were almost always from old jets or a common prop passed between shows.

Having trouble with my D-7 subscription model. I've received two so far - both broken. The first had a detached nacelle, the second had a detached nacelle and the forward hull was broken off. Here's hoping third time's a charm!

Has anybody bothered to create a historically chronological list of the models, as in "when would they have first appeared in the Trek universe"? That's kind of how I wanted to arrange my ships. But I don't want to go trying to look up "years in service" for every single ship if someone else has figured it out already. (LAZY.)

Also trying to decide whether the Bajoran Solar Sailor should be first on the list, because they existed centuries before the one we saw in DS9, or in with the rest of the DS9-Era ones because Sisko & Son built it.

If it ever gets made, I'd say the Doomsday Machine would probably be the first in chronological order of creation. IIRC, that thing was supposed to be pretty ancient, but I think that came from the non-canonical "Vendetta" novel rather than anything official, so  .

Yeah, I was only thinking about the already-produced ships. Obviously I'm going to have to do a lot of shifting as things come out.

If they ever make the Promellian Battlecruiser, it'll be near the beginning as well.

#74 The Bajoran Raider was out today in the UK, can't say I bothered with it myself, anyone else? And the subscribers have the next issue too, 75 the Enterprise-E Captain's Yacht. Think I may pick that one up though looks quite nice.

Quick question though- said ship appears in Star Trek: Insurrection, am I right though that it only actually appears in that one shot/scene where it detaches and Picard & co head down to the planet? Do we ever actually see it again? I can't recall.
