Star Trek: Starships Model/Magazine Subscription

^It's probably something to do with the Cube having electronics inside - no matter how simple they may be - requiring extra customs bullshit that the rest of the models don't have.
I think it's probably more the boxiness of the model. I've ordered many Space Battleship Yamato toys and models from Japan with circuitry included and customs never batted an eye. They probably get all TSA-twitchy over something shaped like a cube for some reason.

Probably doesn't help that this shipment has thousands of these little cubes stacked together

Just got charged for next ships + Vengeance. Need to get on e-Bay and sell it + nuTrek 1701. Too expensive for ships I don't like, lol.

Also, I'm a little disappointed no one commented on my cat with the delta flyer photo above. :P

Picked up the USS Pasteur today (always pleasantly surprised when I walk in a WH Smith and they actually have one left)

Nice model I have to say, looks great sat in the display :techman:

So it was around this time last year I got my first model; the Akira class. As that was the only one I really wanted... a year later and I've now got 26 of the 42 released so far, plus the DS9 special :)
And actually it would be 29 but another 3 I want are still out of stock on their site.

Seriously addictive.

Anyone feel like giving what their Top 5 favourite models/ships would be so far?

I'll have a think what mine would be, but I do know the NX-01 will definitely be there. I only ever have about six on display at any one time (I rotate them about once a fortnight.) But I never ever get bored of having that ship on display, just looks great from any angle.

I have them all out, but space is becoming seriously cramped now, so I may have to take to rotating out ships soon.

That being said I'd say my top 5 are in no particular order:

The Valdore
NX-01
Oberth Class
Pasteur
Romulan Drone.

Thats based purely off of what I consider to technically be the "best" models out there.

FWIW, my least favourite 5 based off the same criteria are:

1701-Refit
Bajoran Solar Sailor
Stargazer
USS Excelsior
Runabout

I'm surprised you didn't include the Enterprise-D. Imho, the NX-01 and 1701-D are the best models from a technical point of view, but I'm no expert.

Also, I absolutely adore the Romulan drone. I never expected this ship to turn out so handy and cool looking.

The Pasteur, my latest model, is well done too. Plus, it slides easily in and out of its base. The only issue I found is that the impulse engines aren't red.

Most of the ships I've seen so many pictures of but it's a whole 'nother thing to hold them in your hands. I never noticed the Pasteur's secondary hull is so thin. That caught me totally by surprise. I've been used to Furuta's mini-version of the ship. I wouldn't mind if Cryptic Studios added the original Olympic-class design to their lineup of research science vessels.

Got the shipping invoice for Vengeance and Deep Space Nine , So it appears I won't be hit with a wait on either special, which so fair with my first Deep Space nine (5th ship I got), and JJprise I have been lucky based on so many comments from posters. Hopefully the US rollout of Vengeance will be better then its roll out of Deep Space Nine, which some people waiting a long, long time for.

Last week I got Delta Flyer and Andorran Cruiser.

To date my Top 5, based solely on quality of model:
1. NX-01 (my first one I had to glue the nacelle back and wasn't 100% accurate), but my latest one was perfect. Its a glorious model.

2. Reliant. Another utterly beautiful build.

3. Enterprise D, Blown away by the quality, 2 copies with almost no flaws, one with some windows misaligned. Only drawback on build is a shuttle bay that isn't the accurate size.

4. Equinox, sweet Jesus you can read the individual life boat numbers! The only thing I wish that was done differently (yes it has spelling errors, but aren't they from the actually build from the FX house?, those errors don't bother me at all) is I wish the bussard collectors were see through.

5. 22nd Century Bird of Prey. A small ship, a small model, but very well detailed.

Honorable mention: Jem'Hadar Cruiser, K'Tinga Class Cruiser, Xindi Insectoid ship (this would be 5th if the rear had paint detail, probably 4th, the model I am most surprised by) Grissom, Valdore, and Enterprise E.

Worst 5 based on build.

5. Deep Space Nine - For the most part a beautiful and richly detailed model, until you get to the three bottom pylons. That are completely misaligned. For a large model, and more expensive one, and for it being the capital design for an entire series, it's extremely annoying.

4. Galor Class - seems void of detail. Which does exist on both physical and CGI model.

3. Ferengi D'Kora - Lacking any paint job on the bottom is extremely disappointing.

2. Stargazer - Lacking paint detail on aft section, and Saucer Section is half the thickness it should be. One of the biggest errors to date for actual body of the ships.

1. Nebula Class ( I love this class), but I hate, hate that its aft section not only has a huge visible seem, but literally no detail. None. The largest and biggest absence of model detail of any ship. Offensive.

Other misses ; Refit Enterprise, it has more detail then the Galor, but by god it's capital ship it should. Runabout, a model that thankfully has a natural form that includes a lot of detail, but to omit all the paneling that is visibly even off of broadcast tv, on such a small sized vessel pisses me off (it's one of my favorite designs so its like salt on the wound). The Prometheus a really nice model, but the absence of any detail on the inner portion of the nacelle's, it is something that should be there. JJ Prise, just so little detail for it's size and the worst issues I have had with any ships for nacelle's (being ship that I find ugly also doesn't help).

Now those are how I view the build and paint job of the ships. They don't necessarily reflect my favorite designs.

But for all my complaints, and as much as some flaws, just really disappoint me, tthere is only one model that I regret getting (JJPrise, I actually really like the films they are in, I just hate that design). I really hope this collection goes way past 90.

I got my Romulan Drone, Enterprise-B, & Vengeance in the mail yesterday.

Thoughts:

  • Romulan Drone: I like this model. It's visually interesting and so refreshingly different than what Trek normally does.
  • Enterprise-B: Much better than Excelsior. If this is what is to be expected of "re-tries" of ships they've already done, I'm looking forward to Enterprise-A even more.
  • Vengeance: I don't know what it is about this ship, but I just love it. I love it's look & feel & sound, heck I love it's taste & smell too. According to the magazine, the creators are the same way. I'd make the stars run pink & green with the blood of Qu'nos, Romulus, and Remus if it meant Starfleet would make more dreadnaughts.

^^^ Agreed. I love the Vengeance. Philosophical arguments about whether Starfleet should have such a vessel notwithstanding, the designers quite masterfully used primitives forming a silhouette that we would all easily and immediately recognize as being Starfleet while still being completely different from everything we've seen in all Trek history. The unique black paint job helps with that, of course. :D

When watching ID, I was halfway wishing it would cut off the Enterprise's silly over-bloated nacelles at the pylons so we could get some more elegantly-designed warp engines in the refit when the battle was over. Hell, almost the whole rest of the ship derives from the TMP refit - time to take it the rest of the way!

Except for the fact that the ship was recycled from one of Voyager's alien-ship-of-the-week CG models.

  • Vengeance: I don't know what it is about this ship, but I just love it. I love it's look & feel & sound, heck I love it's taste & smell too.

What on earth are you doing to that poor model? :wtf:

I suppose there's a lot of different categories you could work out a Top 5 for- favourite ships in the show, how well the models are done, how well they look like they're supposed to, etc etc
I'm just gonna base mine on simply how I like looking at the models on my desk (granted I don't have them all)

It's a tough choice, and I'd be leaving out some great ones, but in no particular order...
1. NX-01 – for the reasons I gave earlier
2. Enterprise-B – Sorry Exceslior fans, don't hate me, but I do prefer the refit look. Only got it a couple of weeks ago but I'm loving this model.
3. Enterprise-E – I think ever since I first caught a glimpse of this ship in the First Contact trailer I wanted a model of this ship, and it took me 18 years to get one :)
4. Delta Flyer – Again, a new addition but its just so cool and sleek looking, love it
5. Romulan Warbird – originally I only intended on purchasing the Starfleet ships, and this was the first Alien one I got. To actually hold it in your hand and see it from different angles and dimensions, and just how much space there is in the "gap" really makes me appreciate the ship more. Great model.

Honourable mentions- 2152 BOP, Enterprise-D, Vor'cha.

As for the Reliant- it's a great model, but I've never had it on display properly. Is it just mine or does it not fit in the holder properly at all? The slightest knock to the table and it will fall out, giving me a heart attack that the nacelles will break off. So back in the box it's gone. Actually the Romulan Warbird had a similar problem too.

Quick question: What's the timing of the special issues? I'm a subscriber in Canada, and just received my 8th shipment earlier this month (expecting #9 next week). Should I expecting DS9 relatively soon? When do/did the others go out for everyone else?

Jjverse klingon bird of prey arrived today in uk.

Which is good as my three year old, to whom they really belong, has flu.

Even in his poorly state he correctly pointed out it looks more like a jem hadar ship.

He loves starship delivery days.

Just received my Vengeance/1701-B/ and Romulan Drone Ship.

Have to say I'm pretty impressed with all of them.

The "B" has great detail in the paint job and the Drone Ship is quite the complex model.

The Vengeance really doesn't look any better than the movie.

*drool*
I seriosuly have to wait till September for these? :(
