Now hear me out. Star Trek has been pretty much about starfleet, and them on space ships and space stations doing what they do. However, the universe is a big place, and with it a huge number of stories.
So what I would like to see is for them to branch out, One idea is a Starfleet Intelligence series. (From the network that brings you 20 versions of CSI and NCIS.. hehe, so not a hard sell)
Pic a time in the multi series universe, Tos, Tng, Post voyager, Enterprise, Whenever. Show a group of SI people, They would have there own ships, special tech, going to planets of the federation, doing spy work on Romulas, Introducing us to the various species that we've only heard about, or read about in books. This series would explore the areas of star trek that are just glossed over, show the every man, show the cultures of other aliens, plenty of room to explore today's issues with terrorism, different cultures etc.

So? Thoughts?? :)

Yes an SI series would be certainly interesting to me. However, i'm not sure TPTB can be convinced of the long-term viability (5-7 years) of the series. 13-16 episodes x 5-7 years is a lot of episodes and they need to have traction for at least that long. One of the great things about ST in general is that it has an anthological feel: you can go from adventure, to action, to comedy, to spy, to diplomacy, to ethics etc. Narrowing it to a single genre or type of show would require a great deal more of selling to convince TPTB .

i had a long winded response but i can break it down better: it just wouldn't be very Trek. One or two episodes, sure, long term series, nah.

I've always wanted to see espionage/thriller stuff in the TOS era.

Sounds like a good idea. For fans who would like to see more worldbuilding of alien societies, a Star Trek spy series would fit the bill.

Such a show could take a page from The Americans. Starfleet intelligence officers could be altered to look like whatever alien species they are sent to spy on. They could embed themselves in the alien world. And through their eyes, viewers can get a glimpse of the daily activities of that alien world and society.

But I don't think such a series can focus on just one alien world during the season. It wouldn't be interesting enough. There would have to be multiple stories on multiple worlds. There have to be action as well. Spies would be taking part in covert operations like sabotaging and stuff like that.

You can't just have a story like TNG "Who Watches the Watchers", where Starfleet anthropologists just sit around and observe.

Or as an alternative, there could be spy stories as part of a more broader Star Trek series.

Quite the contrary, I've come to think a season long arc about a ship doing a really in-depth survey and exploration of a planet could be an interesting and unique idea to Star Trek. There's actually a lot that can be done with the concept, both things that would be fresh and interesting for the franchise and other things that some would consider "traditional Star Trek."

Something like Mission Impossible. The lead actor will spend at least half of every episode, going some where on foot at a dead run.
