Star Trek RPG CODA System

I have a friend who is giving away all his Star Trek RPG books. The books he is offering me is a system called CODA that was produced by Decipher a few years ago. I was curious to see what people's thoughts are about this system. Thank you.

Pretty good system for task resolution. Character creation is a bit of a b*tch, and it incorporates some d20-style "buffs" that can be picked at advancement points that get way confusing. The most clunky part is their "career packages" which don't always make a lot of sense (like separating the Command package from the Helm package).

Personally, I prefer the old FASA rules.

Make that three, However the Last Unicorn Games books and the CODA books make nice reference works to look up stuff. FASA's rules just seemed to flow easier and gave a sense of history as you rolled up your character :)

CODA is, probably, the best of the actual systems but it's almost like Decipher wanted to hide that there was a game in all the random Trek stuff that they throw at you. Character generation is all over the place, and explanations aren't given in a rational or consistant manner. Once you get past that, though, it's a lot of fun to run and play with.

The major downside with Decipher's handling is that TOS is really an afterthought, with much of the attention placed on DS9 and VOY (the then-current shows). The attitude can be particularly glaring at times with "Run it like a TNG script, only make everything suck more".

I generally found that using the CODA system with the LUG and FASA versions of the Trek game providing your background fodder gives you the best 'metaverse' from which to run Trek.

Mileage, of course, varies.
