The Enterprise Incident

In a moment of uncharacteristically erratic behavior, Captain Kirk takes the U.S.S. Enterprise into dangerous Romulan space. But before the crew can return the ship to neutral territory, they find themselves surrounded by deadly Romulan warships and at the mercy of a seductive yet powerful Romulan Commander. But when Spock inadvertently kills the captain while attempting to defend himself from his now violent friend, he alone must attempt to explain the captain’s behavior, negotiate for their freedom and cover-up a dangerous secret mission.

Pretty good. I liked that they threw in a Bird of Prey and added Romulan markings to the battlecruisers.

An A for the classic episode and story...and Excellent for the Remastering! The Romulan D7 with the Bird of Prey artwork under the hull was just inspired, and I'm very happy they decided to throw a smaller "Balance of Terror"-style Romulan cruiser into the mix so all three vessels confronting the Enterprise weren't the same, boring copycat ships. The texture and movements of the Romulan D7 were superior in most respects to last weekend's Klingon D7 in the "Elaan of Troyius" Remastering and I dig how both the disruptors AND frontal torpedoes were fired at the end of the episode when Tal's flagship couldn't find where the Enterprise had gone and started firing blindly.

This episode is decent and very entertaining. This was the first time I have seen it in years. A few observations:

The remastering was nice as usual. The episode looked very sharp and clear.

They made the right choices by adding the bird of prey ship and the paintings on the Klingon designed ships. The cgi stuff (the new Romulan ships, Enterprise cloaking, Romulan/Klingon ship firing torpedos/distruptors) were very good. The shot of Enterprise going under the Romulan ship and moving away fast was neat but looked a little weird.

Why the heck were Enterprise crew acting as though it was the first time they were seeing a Romulan ship with a cloaking device? Even if the cloaking technology in "Ballance of Terror" had become obsolete, it should still have been acknowledged (e.g. "Romulans have developed a new cloaking device" instead of "Romulans have developed a cloaking device"). I guess they didn't want to confuse the casual viewers.

That was one crazy plan that Spock & Kirk concocted to steal the cloaking device. They were lucky it worked.

Romulans have serious security issues. Enemies can easily beam people in and out of their ships. But give them credit for detecting the transmission.

The scenes of Scotty being called to sickbay and then arriving there are absolute classics. Jimmy Doohan plays it just perfectly.

^^^Fontana's first draft script did acknowledge that it was a "new and improved" cloaking device. Click the first link in my sig, then scroll down until you find my synopsis of the script. Spocko Suave is even worse in her first draft! Very very Carl before Carl, you might say.

Sir Rhosis

^^ Thanks for that. One thing I found interesting in that first draft is that "Tal" is one of the 2 Romulan officers who beam over Enterprise. That make more sense than the "2 unknown Romulan officers in exchange for the top 2 Enterprise officers" that we got in the final version. Not that it mattered that much since Kirk didn't really know the command structure on the Romulan ship, and also going over the Romulan ship with Spock was part of his crazy plan.

Spocko Suave, that's a good description

That funky square glass Spocko drank his tranya...er, orange something out of was highly futuristic. ;)

Definitely one of the best episodes of TOS and the RM version was pretty good. About the only thing missing was that they only showed the first Romulan ship decloaking. Agree it was good to see a Bird of Prey among them, along with the bird design being marked on the Klingon-style ships. The Enterprise cloaking toward the end was pretty good and I'm glad they didn't use the sound effect they used in the spinoff series. It better shows that it was an earlier form of cloaking tech. As for the episode, I really liked the interaction between Spock and the Romulan Commander and Kirk seeming to go loco wasn't all that bad. This is the one episode I've been waiting to see Remastered and gladly, it did not disappoint.

A+ for the episode, A- for the Remastering. :)

Until now the remasterd episodes were good because they did not change history. They just upgraded the quality of the episodes. In The Enterprise Incident they changed one of the three Klingon designed ships back to the old style ships and that was not cool.

That’s not what really disappointed me about the episode, it’s that at the end you only see one of the three ships following them. I always assumed all three were chasing the Enterprise, even though you only saw one in the original episode, because why would the Enterprise worry about fighting off only one ship. I could understand three but one would be easy to shake not have to worry so much about using the cloaking device. I wanted to see three ships following for more drama. Maybe it’s just me but I thought it would make more sense and look cooler. I always felt that you did not see three ships chasing the Enterprise in the original was because of the budget of the old show.

I wish the Remastering team would resist the urge to use the shot through the nacelles for every rear view. It worked against them in "Elaan" last week and again this week. The Romulan ship is apparently a few dozen ship lengths away and still out of "firing range". Having just a magnified shot of the ship without the nacelles providing a context for distance and scale eliminates that problem.

We can see the stars streaking away behind the ship; don't treat us like idiots by showing the nacelles every time we're looking backwards.

I liked the shot of the Enterprise blowing right by the Romulans ships.

I also liked the nice touch of having the Romulan ship actually open fire, seeing as Tal does give that order.

BTW, anybody know what Joanne Linville is up to these days?

Why not? I thought it was *very* cool.

Did anyone in dialogue specifically say that all three ships were D7s? No? Then no history was changed. :p

You're kidding me right? TOS-RM has changed lots of designs already. In "The Ultimate Computer" for example, they changed the design of space station to look like the Vanguard from the novel series.

Modifying or improving a design and completely changing one from a Klingon to a Romulan is not the same thing.

That has botherd me also. I must point out that I mostly please with the remasteriing. I have been wishing for it since I saw Star Wars back in 77.

The sound of some one's childhood being ripped away?

I think it went rather well..the 3rd season had a few good episodes, and this is one of em but was limited by budget and effects for the time, I think they did an excellent job in the 60s and the remastering was well done for the most part.. a shot or 2 could have been done differently but that's just pickin nits...

Episode gets an A- from me and an excellent for remastered effects..

She's still around. Retired. Her kids appeared on "Enterprise."

I very much wanted to have sex with her when I was a youngster. Very exotic. Those boots of hers caused me great trouble in my dating years.

Episode-wise, the only issue I had was the scale of the ships surrounding the Enterprise: I never figured the Romulan Bird of Prey to be roughly the same size as a D-7. More of a scout ship.

Joe, tiny scaled

But the space station was completely changed.
