The Deadly Years

On a routine stop to Gamma Hydra IV to deliver supplies, the U.S.S. Enterprise finds the colony affected by accelerated aging, which has killed most of the colonists. But when the landing party returns to the ship, they are shocked to find the aging acceleration has begun to affect each of them as well. As the senior officers succumb to the effects of old age, command falls to Commodore Stocker who plots a disastrous short-cut to Starbase 10 through the Neutral Zone in a bid to save Kirk and the landing party. So left with little options, McCoy must race against time to find a cure for the aging officers before the ship and her crew is obliterated by the Romulans.

Just a reminder: The next two weeks are reruns of the remastered episodes “The Doomesday Machine” and “Space Seed”. Normally I would skip a rerun but since these are both such popular episodes I have decided to do a discussion thread for them anyway! :bolian: I will see you again next week.

It will be another 11 hours before it airs here, but that sounds encouraging. Thanks for the early review.

Just watched this. I've always liked this episode so it got a A- from me.

There were a lot of new shots of Romulan vessels attacking the Enterprise but curiously, only one angle of it being hit. And the power move, when the Enterprise bugged out of the Neutral Zone at Warp 8, was well handled.

Above average remastering.

^ The ship being hit was nicely reminiscent of Errand of Mercy. I didn't mind the shot appearing twice.

I have always liked this episode despite Shatner's heavy handed "old" acting. (Nimoy was spot on though.) And I remember as a kid how scary I though Bones looked after he had aged. Of course now all I see is how wicked bad that wig of his is. However, I find Kirk's healing scene scary now. That series of quick shots of Shatner's crotch writhing around is not something I need to see especially since I had just eaten.

As for the remastering, I loved the Romulon battle. Seeing all of those Birds of Prey firing on the Enterprise was really sweet. I am not so sure about the Warp jump though. I think she may have whipped around to fast to properly sell her size and weight. I gave it an Above Average.

A+ this is one of my favorite episodes.

The remastering was average although I tuned in halfway through so maybe I missed the good stuff.

^ Not really. All the good stuff was at the end.

And I have been thinking. Instead of the Enterprise swooping around as she goes to warp I think it might have been better if she turned in place and then sped off away from the camera. Of course I have about forty years of Trek ship maneuvers embedded in my brain so when the animators have her doing that is contrary to that set visual style it bugs me.

I don't get to see this until Sunday, but the preview pic looking at the belly of the bop is very cool. The lighting looks right for the 60's. Something about it looks like it could have been taken from a movie of that time.
