Spoilers Star Trek: Prodigy General Discussion Thread

A thought I was entertaining a week ago is that Murf could be one of The Hundred, the baby Changelings the Founders sent out into the galaxy, of which Odo was one, as was Laas from Chimera and the undeveloped Changeling in The Begotten. But I doubt that's really a "deep cut" either.

I was about to mention the Baku Rhy'l(sp?), the little handheld, soft-bodied pet owned by the boy Artim in INS. But that's a solid life form and not gelatinous or translucent in any way. Plus a Rhy'l is much smaller than Murf and fits in a child's hand.

The doctor worried about the aliens on the hypertime planet being blobs, and Janeway said that he'd be the best-looking blob on the planet XD
That's the only mention of a living blob in the franchise that I can remember, aside from the founders.

Maybe he's part Talaxian, on his Mother's side. They're in the right neighborhood.

I was going to say "Not really, they're on the opposite end of the Delta Quadrant from Talax," but then I remembered "Homestead." The Delta Quadrant is huge and takes decades to cross, except when it's narratively convenient to treat it as a single neighborhood. Grrrrrrr.....

The Paramount+ press releases this morning had the official episode description and writer/director credits for this week’s penultimate episode of Prodigy Season 1A, A Moral Star, Part 1.

ViacomCBS Press Release said:
Episode 109 – A Moral Star, Part 1 (Available to stream Thursday, January 27th)

The crew forgo their dreams of Starfleet to return to Tars Lamora in a no-win scenario.

Written by: S1 Writers Room (Kevin & Dan Hageman, Julie Benson, Shawna Benson, Lisa Schultz Boyd, Nikhil S. Jayaram, Diandra Pendleton-Thompson, Chad Quandt, Aaron J. Waltke)

Directed by: Ben Hibon

Notably, every member of the writers room staff share the episode’s writing credits. That’s rad.

That's unusual. It's normal for every member of the writers' room to contribute partially to breaking the story and revising the script, but WGA rules usually limit the credit to the primary writer or writers of the script. And showrunners generally write the final draft of every script, but it's considered improper for them to put their names on any scripts they don't write themselves, because that's taking money away from the other writers even though showrunners already get a steady executive producer's salary.

It really is unusual! Two or three writers splitting a credit isn’t uncommon, but ‪‪I’ve never heard of an entire room sharing it before.

Jankom Pog distinctly mentioned a sleeper ship.
So, to me, that indicates he's either a pureblooded Tellarite, or he is a hybrid and has some other alien DNA mixed in him too from another AQ species (before the sleeper ship left). That could explain his design too.

The Talaxian colony from 'Homestead' is certainly in the right area of the galaxy where Tars Lamora was... or maybe a year or two travel at high warp... not decades.

It also depends on how much Warp drive improved in the proceeding years since VOY returned to the Federation (and possible proliferation of HyperSubspace communications technology - aka the Pathfinder Project and MIDAS array since 2376).

UFP already managed to sustain Warp 9.9 (21 473 times speed of light per Tom Paris statement) without issues on USS Prometheus in VOY's 4th season (or nearly 4 years into its journey home)... so its not impossible that 8 years after that, some of the galactic races in a region closer to UFP might have advanced similarly in terms of Warp speed... maybe not all the way to Warp 9.9 for most, but 9.6 to 9.75 perhaps to shorten the journeys from decades to years, or 1 year and less (though other species would probably get to Warp 9.9 - like the Diviner because it was mentioned 4000 Ly's can be crossed in months by the REV-12).

There have also been multiple instances of other characters referring to Jankom as a Terllarite (both Dal and Janeway), indicating he is meant to be clearly/obviously a Tellarite via appearance.

With all the information we have, that his character is officially described as a Tellarite, his mentioning a Tellar sleeper ship, and others immediately identifying him as a Tellarite on sight, ‪‪I think it’s by far most likely he’s a Tellarite, not a hybrid, and this is just an evolution of the design (and with his mohawk hair styling, skin mottling, and tusks, continuing their development from Disco).

And in a lot of ways Pog looks more like a TOS or ENT Tellarite than a DSC one. The DSC ones are more brutish and less human-looking.

Besides, this show has already redesigned Brikar from how they were previously depicted in the novels, they're not going to feel the need to stay faithful to a computer graphic from one of the other shows.

Sorry, how do you visually redesign a species that has only been described in book prose? To my knowledge in the novels they are said to be large, stonelike without prominent noses, with shale-like scales that they shed after puberty.
