Star Trek: Prodigy Finds New Home At Netflix

I caught the plague (aka Covid) on Saturday :ack: and had to stay at home instead of flying home for Christmas. :angryrazz: The one thing that’s kept me going (besides the Paxlovid!) is getting to watch all the TV I want to watch with zero guilt.

Maybe it was brain fog or simply my bad memory, but I had completely forgotten that Prodigy’s S1 release on Netflix was yesterday. You can imagine my delighted surprise while scanning the available titles and seeing Star Trek: Prodigy in the “Recently Added” section! I binge-watched the entire first half of the season Christmas day and am starting the second half shortly.

I still do not understand how Paramount+ canceled this delightful series. A small, petty corner of my brain hopes Prodigy’s viewing numbers on Netflix outshine anything being shown on P+ through the new year. :nyah:

GO PRODIGY! :techman:

Simple. It wasn't popular enough to warrant further investment. Then people had an illusion of scarcity moment and went all in.

Time will tell if such momentum actually follows through or if it was just temporary interest and people have moved on to new toys.

Interestingly, it seems that Prodigy has found an audience, as it's in Netflix's top 10 shows for kids this week.

Paramount did a horrible job promoting it.

I also sort of wish they stopped trying to market it to kids. Like, sure make it kid friendly, but the show is clearly watched by older people... no kid cares about Janeway and Chakotay... it's not 1997. The kids who care about them are old now.

I'm glad PRODIGY is in Netflix's top 10. A good old fashioned middle finger to Paramount Plus.

Well, there's my daily being called old.

Nice to check that off my list.

I suspect that was a failure of communication between Paramount and Nickelodeon and whatever agreement they have.

I've been called old recently, too. (As a joke, of course.) I reminded him that many of the movies he likes were made while I was a kid, so a better term is 'classic". He nodded in agreement.

So fireproof... I guess that makes you classic.:bolian:

Thank you. I appreciate that.

And Nickelodeon.

Oh, i'm right there with you.

I DO suspect part of Prodigy getting the boot was the reaction to Picard S3... I think Paramount was using Prodigy as the "Voyager reunion show"... Terry Matalas pretty said as much, opting to not utilize Harry Kim, to let Prodigy use him. BUT... when S3 got the reaction it did, I think Paramount's ears perked up and they were eying a live action Voyager production.

But now they're kind of shoehorned into using that. I think they wanted to quietly get rid of Prodigy so we all forgot about it and do their own thing. Turns out, it had a larger following than they expected.

Well, no. They wanted to save money. That's the name of the game right now, with costs constantly increasing, between strikes, streaming services lackluster performances, and multiple series going on. There was no malice behind it; it was business.

And suddenly people had to jump up and go "Hey! I like that whatchamacallit!" And demonstrated popularity through an upsurge of demand. Now, whether or not that was a flash in the pan, or it actually has staying power will be the true test. Personally, I think it was an illusion of scarcity fear but that's me.

Paramount+ simply does not have the audience, Netflix has far more reach. The appeal of Prodidy is not limited to Star Trek fans, but includes does who watch similar animated shows on Netflix already, such as the Hageman's own Trollhunters. There is less resistance to animated content and more children/families who are potential viewers, compared to the isolated P+ and the old fashioned and very specialised Nickolodeon.

Besides, viewing numbers weren't that bad for Prodigy on P+ according to the few metrics that have been shown, but I guess it was Nickolodeon that didn't see sufficient return on investment, while P+ has other Star Trek series that score as well or better in viewers (Picard S3 no doubt was a big hit for P+).

The Hagemans have also explained that launching the show on Christmas day is actually a good move, as it means many children have much more viewing time than usual.

Save Money? Thought New Trek was bringing in allot of money for Paramount! For years they burned through $ like it was nothing.
Prodigy is one of the best, so it gets sold. The rest just get cancelled?
Im just glad Prodigy is going to continue.

Streaming services across the board are losing money.

Prodigy did not bring in the views.

I did my small part, watching all 20 episodes currently available (again, 3rd time through) on Netflix over the Holiday break. Looking forward to season 2. I hope the viewership numbers for season 1 help spur Netflix to go for a season 3. Though I'm not the target demographic (older than dirt), I enjoy the show and will watch more (and more).
