Spoilers Star Trek: Picard General Discussion Thread

I guess they don't do psych evaluations in this future since her undiagnosed issues has put the entire mission at risk.
Agnus isn't a Star Fleet Officer.
She's a Scientific Consultant whose work FOR Star Fleet was shut down right at the height of her accomplishments with Brophy.
(it's surprising how much can be ignored when results are the only goal)

She was essentially twiddling her thumbs when Picard approached her.

Also, Picard was not working for Star Fleet when he did approach her, so he didn't have the usual over abundance of info to work with.

So, I know we've been talking about season 2, but I've been rewatching parts of season 1 and I have some questions:

How did the Romulan xB Ramdha know that Soji was the destroyer / a synth? Only thing I can think of is that she was aware of what "Jana" looked like from the Ibn Majid first contact mission with the synths, but it's not stated.

Why did the captain of the Ibn Majid listen to Commodore Oh and kill the synths? Was he just a horrible captain? I can't see any other captain we've seen on screen doing that..they'd contact starfleet high command to find out what the hell was going on. And why didn't Rios ever tell anyone what Oh ordered? How could Oh give this order and have it followed without anyone else in Starfleet knowing or caring?

How did Oh know Jana and her companion were synths? When first contact happened did they introduce themselves as synths? I don't recall it being stated in the dialogue. Why didn't Oh try to find out where the synths came from at that time so she could have the Romulans destroy them?
Captain Vandermeer listened to Commodore Oh and destroyed the synths because he was told that his entire ship would be destroyed with all hands if he didn't - he was forced to weigh the lives of these two strangers against the lives of his entire crew. It was a black flag directive, straight from Starfleet Security, Rios said, and it came after they sent all the information about the ship and its crew back to Starfleet to tell them of a first contact situation. We know from what Rios told us that Vandermeer was horrified by what he had done, horrified enough to commit suicide when Rios challenged him about it, but he followed the order because he believed it was legit - it came from the head of Starfleet Security, he had no reason to doubt it - and because he believed it was important enough to make that threat against his ship and crew. He trusted Starfleet Security to know what they were asking and to not give the order lightly, even if there was no explanation given.

Rios never told anyone what Oh ordered because with Vandermeer dead, command fell to him, and he was under the same order - cover it up on pain of the destruction of the entire ship with all hands. The ibn Majid was completely expunged from Starfleet records - her entire crew would have been under some kind of Official Secrets Act forbidding them to talk about it, even if they left Starfleet entirely. As head of Starfleet Security, Oh clearly held a lot of power and a lot of trust. We don't know what she told the people around her to justify shrouding the ibn Majid in secrecy like that.

We don't know what was in the information the ibn Majid sent to Starfleet about their contact with Beautiful Flower and Jana, but there must have been something in it that informd Oh of who they really were. She'd have been on the lookout for anything of the sort - she knew that Bruce Maddox had done a runner to continue his work in secret.

We also don't know how Ramdha knew that Soji was a synth, but before her assimilation she was a high level Zhat Vash operative, she may well have seen images of Jana and recognised Soji from that.

They know about the episode, there’s no way they don’t. I guess they felt they didn’t need it for their current storyline because the current trauma they’re exploring goes back to his childhood. I still don’t understand why they didn’t incorporate “Inner Light” because it WOULD have made sense to do so by at least mentioning it, but, alas.

It makes an equal amount of sense that Jean-Luc would bury that experience even deeper than his childhood memories and never talk to anyone about it (it also never interfered with his Starfleet duties and he never had to “run away” from the relationship either so maybe this is why it is being ignored, it was something different in - literally - a different life). There comes a point where you just have too MUCH trauma on your plate and your only wish is to bury it all and never see it again (I am totally not speaking from experience… naaah).

Especially if you consider that the main theme of PIC was in fact taken from that wonderful episode ;)

I think I wrote that somewhere in my earlier post but then I also wrote said post at like 3 in the morning or something I think… I don’t remember, I’m sorry, I’m getting old  (I DO clearly remember how excited Daniel Stewart got when someone told him that the whole thing was taken from a song his character Batai plays in the episode tho)

But yeah this does make it all the more puzzling that they’ve completely ignored “Inner Light” so far plot-wise. Maybe this is on purpose after all tho. Who knows what season 3 will bring?

I could actually imagine a part of the Season 3 plot being about some Kataanians having survived the nova back then and the Federation or another faction encountering their descendants.

I believe “Inner Light” WAS supposed to have a sequel back then with Eline being found in stasis aboard the probe and all, but the idea never came to pass as an actual episode. I doubt they’re gonna do that now in some way - I’m FB friends with Margot Rose (Eline) and I haven’t seen her doing any acting lately, she seems to be more of a musician these days. Unless of course she did something in total secret, one can never rule surprises out these days, considering how they managed to keep the return of the TNG cast a secret for ten months... anything is possible. ;)

Yeah, would be great to see her reprising her role :techman:

And/or finally casting Brian Brophy for Season 3 as a kataanian leader ;)

I really like Eline and I think she as Jean-Luc’s “wife” of many years would be in a unique position to understand him and his emotions. But, alas, the writers of the show have said repeatedly that they’re not going to re-hash old plots, so… granted, this would not exactly be a re-hash, more of a continuation, but, alas, it’s doubtful.

Oh no, not the Brian Brophy stuff again :lol::lol:

Think especially because of the main theme, the impact on Jean Luc's character and that it's possibly the last ever opportunity to see Patrick Stewart as Picard, that the Kataanians have a really good chance to appear in Season 3 ;)

If I were writing the show I’d have worked his life on Kataan into the plot in a prominent way already (I do always work it into my fics), but… I’m not writing it, sadly. lol

But I do agree, I’d be interested to see this happening also. I’d also love for Dan Stewart to reprise his role as Batai. I know he’s still very fond of the character. :)

There was a very odd comic sequel

Yup, I know - I think that one was very much based on the actual idea for the sequel episode. But then, comics always have a lot more creative freedom than episodes because they’re not restrained by budgets etc. It makes sense that they put the idea SOMEWHERE once they realized they couldn’t have it as an actual episode on the show.

There was a very odd comic sequel

"Odd" doesn't even begin to cover it. The storyline was all over the place and made little sense, and the artwork was some of the worst I've ever seen. I'd like to take a mulligan on that one. I feel like it was a disservice to the original story.

All the more reasons to make things right by putting some of the idea into PIC’s third season

Would be a laugh riot if Picard was stopped on the street because somebody thought he was Walter Blunt.

God, I wish that show hadn't been axed.

I’m STILL bitter about this. I know what you mean.

And I’d be HERE for a crossover like this. Maybe they should meet - I remember Sir Patrick saying in an interview that Jean-Luc and Walter would NOT get along AT ALL… I’d love to see THAT catfight

I just wanted to share the news I just saw on twitter Star Trek Picard No Man's land on Amazon.con now has audio cds for sale for fans like me who 've been wanting it on cd to listen to the story on a cd. . I'm so glad they're doing this for Picard fans thank you so much.:bolian::beer:

I'm planning to do a second full re-watch of TNG after the third season of PIC. There will be definitely be some things in there now where I'll be able to say, "So that's where they planted that seed!" and "I know where they ended up going with that now!" It'll be a different perspective.
