Spoilers Star Trek: Picard General Discussion Thread

So far, the episodes in ranked order of goodness (not necessarily enjoyment) Best to worst:

Episode 4
Episode 1
Episode 3
Episode 2
Episode 5

So really, all over the map. No great consistency yet.

There may be action, brainless action that is (skinhead Romulans with motorcycle helmets that aim worse than Stormtroopers launching their silly attacks), but there is zero social commentary. Where do you see any relevant social commentary? Potentially, yes. That's all it is - potentially. Sounds (and looks) like 0% Trek to me.

You don't see any social commentary in a story about fears surrounding one social minority displaced onto a second who are fleeing a disaster and declined help they had been promised to placate member states who were threatening secession?

During Brexit?

Re watch TOS and tell me how cerebral it really is without reference to the legacy which came after.

Profanities, alcoholism, smoking, drug use, to name just a few. The list is long. Those are 21st century issues, styles, characters, behaviors, and scenarios depicted as the 24th/25th Star Trek. Those hacks are trying to sell us something that is not. They should be candid and say, yes "this is the Jar Jar universe" from the reboot movies. It's another reboot/revision/reimagination of the known Trek universe. That would be fair. But they are fooling the audience.

Just to be clear, your impression of Trek was that these things had been erased from the entire universe? That human nature had been so fundamentally modified that the drives which produce these things no longer existed?

How did you square this belief with, just to name one example, Tasha Yar's background story?
