So, I think this episode was a slight step down from last week's. I might still give this one an 8. But based on all the strong feelings I, and others here, have about the episode, enough to drive all this discussion, I think this says something about the improved quality of season 3 so far.

I liked a lot of it, but it feels a little like we are already spinning our wheels a little just in episode 2. Where I felt a lot of interesting things were set up last week, this week feels like those things weren't really developed very much, or maybe just weren't satisfying to me.

Most of us suspected Worf was the handler, so not a big surprise.
Jack seemed like he would be Picard's son, so not a big surprise (unless he's not!)
Vadic seemed like she would be a mustache-twirling villain, and she is (but a happy one), so not a big surprise. [Hope there is more to her later.]
Raffi's story didn't really go anywhere as her only lead is dead and she learned nothing else.
We spend the whole episode just staring out at Vadic's ship, listening to monologs, and waiting for a very extended hour to be up. There wasn't really any "ticking clock" feeling to make the timecrunch feel important. Picard, et al weren't really trying to "solve" the situation. It just turns on a last second invalid order from the retired Admiral and off we go.

So, I guess I am just looking forward to more progress next week. Maybe these first two episodes could have been condensed into one somehow, but I wouldn't want to lose the character work for Riker, Picard, Beverly (though she was sidelined for most of ep 2), Seven, and Jack. So, maybe just having more for our characters to do would have improved things. Only Picard does anything and that is only really ask jack some questions without serious followups.

According to Robert Meyer Burnett who has seen the entire season, S3 is structured like a 10 hour movie. Episodes 1-4 are "act 1", eps 5-8 are "act 2" and eps 9-10 are the big finale. So that might explain the perceived pacing issues. If true then it is good pacing for the length of story.

Also, i hope that they give Beverly the slutty mom of the century award. Not informing the father about a child is unforgivable, especially when many would consider the father to be a decent und just role model. Ofc they are going to present some one or two line explanation, it is still very wrong. Shame on you Bev…
Leave the misogyny and slut-shaming offscreen, there's no room for it on the board.

While it can be an interesting discussion for the Neutral Zone if a father always has the right to know if he has children, similar insults are absolutely out of place.

And honestly I don't even understand how the heck they fit in this particular case. If we were all in agreement that Picard would absolutely have had the right to know he had a child, at most Beverly would have been wrong not to inform him. I can't even fathom what "slutiness" has to do with it.

There are no pacing issues, some people just have the attention span of a gnat. I'm perfectly content to see how things play out.

There is nothing misogynistic about calling someone a slut because he or she concealed the existence of a child to the other parent. It is the in fact the epitome of human slutiness. The word is not forbidden and it has become eclectic in usage. Misogyny is defined as hate towards women, which couldn’t be more far off from the meaning of „slut“ in this particular context.
Maybe it is also a cultural misconception. Where i come from, sluts can be either women or men…

Arguing with the mod that just warned you, not your best move.

From the Merriam-Webster (which I suppose is a reliable source).
SLUT:
disparaging + offensive : a promiscuous person : someone who has many sexual partners —usually used of a woman

And I really don't know what it has to do with this case. As far as we know Picard was the only Beverly partner in 20 years. And in any case I hope that you don't want to judge a woman from the number of her partners.

Decent second episode. Really like Vadic, she enjoys her work. Expected the "Is he REALLY Picard's son?" thing to be drawn out until the very end.

Shaw has no control over his ship. At all. Seven is relieved of duty and 5 minutes later she's just doing her own thing. Now Picard's taken over.

The Raffi plotline made me sad, she's a (former?) addict in a situation she definitely shouldn't be in, and ends up getting fucked up an Space Eye Juice. Worf was of course her handler, and didn't look anywhere near as frail as Michael Dorn did in Ted several years ago.

So near the end it seems to be going a bit Wrath of Khan and BobW in some respects (powerful enemy, hide in Nebula), and not in a good way. Overall not a terrible episode but not as good as episode 1.

Some annoying characters in this episode:

Jack Crusher
Raffi (nothing new there)
Vadic

all of them are badly written and very poorly acted.

I just explained that the word „slut“ has become socially eclectic in usage and the first thing people do is to throw definitions from a very old dictionary at me. No, in 2023 that is not the definition of the word „slut“.

I think we need to keep in mind that we are just at ep 2 of a 10 ep season. RMB says that S3 is structured like a 10 hour movie. So we are essentially still in the first act of a movie. There are going to be things that have not been revealed or explained yet. Let's not jump to conclusions. I think a lot of our questions will be answered later. We will find out who Vadic is and what her motivations are. According to people who have seen the entire season, Vadic is not a one dimensional cartoon villain. She has a great backstory and sympathetic motivations. I can't wait to see that. And we will learn why Bev kept Jack a secret from Picard. Hopefully, her reasons will make sense. Let's not assume that she is a "slut" and a terrible mother. That is very unfair.

About Vadic:
“The people who dislike me are gamblers, low-level gangsters, the fathers of daughters everywhere — not vigilante bounty hunters willing to pick a fight with the Federation.”

Maybe i'm not entirely wrong about her being Jarok's daughter and her motive...

Gave it an 8!
I would give it a 9 if Picard's son wasn't so annoying. I can't stand of him. I hope they will tone him down a bit in the next episodes.
I like Shaw, the poor bastard having his ship hijacked by Picard..
I really enjoyed Vadic, especially her being so giddy having to pursuit Titan.
Raffi's plot is also interesting..although I am not sure if she is that good of an intelligent officer... and well... Worf!

Some physics problem I see.. When the ship broke apart when it hit the titan.. 30 minutes later pieces were still hanging around..
Wouldn't they have .. Well left the scene? The shrike put it into motion, it bounced off the shields going every which way.. No piece should have hung around.
A physics problem that can maybe rationalize md away?
The impact might have absorbed most of the kinetic energy.
What remains might have not been enough to overcome the Titan’s and Shrike’s own gravity.
They are pretty big and massive ships and do assert some low gravitational influence.
Asteroids of similar size are able to hold onto rubble loosely sticking to the surface even.
Now if something else bumbs the wreckage it would fly off, for sure.
