I seem to have switched universes :D
My memory, 2 weeks old, is that Picard's big line "Because he is my son!" was much stronger, with force, almost yelling across the bridge. Here it is much softer. Either I was so impressed with the scene that it formed an exaggerated memory, or they used a different take for the final release :D
My friend who saw E2 with me 2 weeks ago also remembers it differently.
Can someone who's on Twitter ask Terry if they used a different take where Picard says it more softly compared to the premiere, where he said it with more force, and Shaw rolled his eyes in response...?

Shaw's clearly more reasonable than other characters in his plot role. He's the Jelico or Nechayev, but he's willing to give an inch when it matters. Just his anti-Borg bigotry makes it hard to like him.

It seemed a bit jarring having Worf go straight for the beheading after we're used to see him in TNG and DS9 saving the lethal force for revenge targets and necessity.

Well that wasn't very good.

I thought the main villain was terrible. Way too try hard. Completely generic.

The show also looks terrible. The visuals suck. The CGI looks cheap and fake. The sets are laughably dark.

There's lots of clumsy exposition. Characters are regularly saying what they're thinking to convey information to the audience.

And the character interactions still feel like same old Kurtzman Trek. Overly snarky, emotional and quippy. Very immature.

Get Raffi off of my screen. Ugh.

So not counting a few recorded player piano rolls and some wax cylinders, 20th century is the first century where music gets seriously recorded in its original form. That hasn't shown itself to have halted the development of music in its tracks. Trends come and go. We didn't get stuck listening to 1920's blues and string bands forever. Some still do. And yeah, sure, people do like to listen to music from 200 years ago, though again in fairness, not a lot of people crazy about even earlier music. It would just be cool if they'd TRY to have something musically original more often. They've lowered the bucket into that well too many times.

Which is the biggest problem with Picard. They're just doing stuff that's been many times before, and better.

I'll say again that the issue for me isn't the music, it's the song choice. They picked an almost hit from an obscure 70s Texas rock band. I would bet the vast majority of people today (especially people watching the show) have never even heard of Baby. Certainly no one in the future will remember them. So the song choice completely fails both diegetically and non-diegetically.

But, I mean, it has "Starship" right there in the lyric, so...

What honestly is the deal with Klingon and other villain bridges being filled with smoke? Too much money spent on weapons and not enough spent on air filters?

I can understand the notion of the profanity taking one out of the moment, given that it was never present in TNG. That being said, when TOS made the jump to the big screen (TWOK and on) its use of profanity increased quite a bit as well.

On the other hand, one can argue that the more realistic language ups the immersion factor since you're not feeling the heavy hand of network Standards & Practices sanitizing things.

Meanwhile, after all the discussion of "anachronistic" idioms in the episode thread last week, I was amused to see "running on fumes" actually pop in Episode 2 -- for real! :)

It’s on Prime now, and the contrasts are better, like ep1.
But… I think the whole season is just way too dark, much like ‘Solo: a Star Wars Story’ was. My guess is someone at P+ wanted to make it all more bright, but instead just leveled up the contrasts and colors, making it even harder to watch….
