Spoilers Star Trek: Picard 3x01 - "The Next Generation"

Solid 8 for me, could maybe hit 8.5. It had some pacing issues for me, like others have said, the Rafi stuff felt thrown in, but I've also never really been a fan of her character so I found it the least interesting story of the episode. Also, not sure why Captain Shaw is such a dick towards Seven. The way he mocked her about being ex-borg. Why would he choose her as his XO then? Seemed weird.
I'm in the same camp with some others about the Titan, not a fan of the way this one looks. The Neo-Constitution class ship does nothing for me, it looks blocky and is missing those smooth curving lines we've become used to with a lot of other Starfleet ships.
My biggest gripe is why is it so dark? Not the story, but every scene is so dimly lit. Are bright lights a thing of the past in the 2400's?

It is. Bright lights? That's soooo 2259!
It seems to be a deliberate choice now in many shows. I guess TV shows think that dark makes it look edgier and more cinematic.
Because that has been contradicted dozens of times since TMP.
I feel like that can be handwaved away by stating the new, modern warp drives make it possible to go to warp closer to a planet than the old technology. Seems like an important added convenience for a ship to not have to taxi away from a solar system at impulse before going to warp.
I always hated it when people tried to make her use that name, or called her Annika. Mostly Janeway iirc. I guess it's because no matter how much she would develop or, as Janeway called it, recover her humanity, she would still never be the same person that she would have become without encountering the Borg.
So, maybe if we're strictly logical, she would choose a third name as she isn't all Borg anymore either. But I've become quite fond of "Seven of Nine," so there's that.
In his mind, could be he's making sure the potential Borg threat is kept in check after she advanced so quickly. Not rational, since you'd want someone you actually trust watching your back, but I don't think Shaw is rational on this point.
See where it goes, but so far, I liked it. Definitely better than the Season 1 "everything you know is gone and the future is shit" vision we got, and while I liked the open of Season 2 (or at least that things felt more like the Star Trek we know), it felt like it kinda fell apart as things went on. Would have been happier had we had THIS as the first season, and skipped the dystopia bit we did for 2 seasons. Sure, nostalgia and whatnot, but what we got today was at least somewhat closer to a line we could draw from the old show and movies. People moved on, but the characters still felt like they existed in-universe and not random characters with same names like earlier seasons gave us.
We'll see how Crusher's kid goes. Doesn't seem young enough for a post-NEM hookup that Beverly ran off after, but having the kid during her Season 2 hiatus kinda makes her look like shit if she dumped him and ran back off to space. She was devoted to Wesley, and was somewhere where kids were allowed/somewhat common, so ditching him would be a really bad look...

Maybe it's just me but I didn't think there was *that much* fan service, memberberries, whatever you want to call it. I've seen people saying Riker and Picard talking is fan service. What's fan service about that? These are two main characters literally talking and getting along. The spacedock music was a callback to the TOS scores, but the Titan theme was new. We've heard the Star Trek fanfare and TNG theme in this show and the Trek fanfare has been common in the new shows.
Maybe Picard's BOBW log playing (what was the point of that?) and the Garrett statue. But I dont know..i just dont consider anything that references things we've seen before just there for "memberberries" or fan service.

I assumed that Beverley had fallen asleep listening to Picard's old logs (maybe for clues to the threat?) and that was the one that just happened to be going when the viewers "arrived".
I'm glad I wasn't the only one that thought that.

Seven finally gets to be in StarFleet, especially with the endorsement of Admirals Picard & Janeway.
She's now fast tracked to be a 1st Officer.
And now she complains about being in StarFleet.
Talk about regretting your own decisions.
I gave it an 8, because it was mainly set-up, though that's fine for episode 1. It was good set-up!
Enjoyed Picard catching up with Riker, the uncomfortable dynamic between Shaw and Seven, and Beverly's intriguing opening scene.
There was a very nice scene with Picard and Laris too, which I'm delighted was there. I was worried they'd just ignore her after season 2. I appreciated that some time has passed and their relationship has developed.
Riker's plan was perhaps not the best, though it came through. I presume he thought Seven would grease the wheels with Shaw, but overestimated how much influence she would have over him.
Got to love how Beverly's explicit order of "no Starfleet" immediately lead Picard to contact Starfleet Captain Riker to commandeer Starfleet's USS Titan and blab everything to Starfleet Commander Seven of Nine.
Maybe that's why Bev cut him off for twenty years.

I do wonder if they're going to try for a deadname metaphor here.
Though it does raise some interesting questions as I've seen people compare "Seven" to a slave name. (which opens its own can of worms). But it does seem to be the name she prefers (As does Ryan AFAIK.)
Nah. He was being playful. It was perfectly in character for him and he was throwing shade at Picard within a few minutes of this..
